Benicio Del Toro In For ‘Inherent Vice'

Well, it looks like we aren't the only ones dropping "Inherent Vice" casting news today. The Wrap is now reporting that Benicio Del Toro may be joining the film as well (though the studio has yet to confirm his involvement). According to the report Del Toro will be playing "an attorney who's always trying to help the protagonist out of trouble, though he's not an actual criminal lawyer. The character isn't a major role but is expected to be a potential scene-stealer" which would seem to indicate he'll be playing Doc's lawyer, Sauncho Smilax. His leading role in the underrated "Che" aside, it's been a while since we've seen Del Toro really tear into a really great role like his brilliant late 90s/early 00s streak ("Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas," "Traffic," "21 Grams," "The Usual Suspects," etc.), so this is definitely exciting news. It will be Del Toro's first time working with PTA and somewhat surprisingly, also his first time acting in a film alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Filming on 'Vice' is set to get underway later this month so there should be lots more casting announcements to come. And if you're involved with the production, why don't you drop us a line?

  5. When I was reading Inherent Vice, I could think of no one else for this character.

  6. Fun fact: When Del Toro won his Oscar for "Traffic," he beat out Joaquin Phoenix of "Gladiator." It marked that first time that there were two candidates for Best Supporting Actor who had been born in Puerto Rico.

  7. I was really hoping this role would go to Luis Guzman. I m definitely okay with this though.

    1. I like Guzman but he's a little one note so I'm really glad to see this role go to Benicio Del Toro. An incredible actor who hasn't work with PTA yet has me very excited.

  8. forget comparing "Traffic", Modage- This is way bigger news than Kevin J O'Connor.

bigger names to come still? I am predicting a trifecta with Robert Pattison, Michael Shannon, and PSH...

also, something at the back of my mind is telling me that either Ben Affleck or Leonardo Dicaprio are on board. both are huge admirers of PTA (i.e., Affleck's countless allusions during awards season, Dicaprio's "biggest regret"...)

    1. The only problem with Ben is that he is in or going into pre production Live By Night or whatever the Lehane adaptation is called.
