‘Inherent Vice' To Begin Filming Today

Almost 2 years to the day after "The Master" began shooting back in 2011, "Inherent Vice" is ready to go before cameras today. The 7th film by Paul Thomas Anderson centers on a pothead private eye named "Doc" Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) and his hazy adventures in late 60's Los Angeles among a large cast of eccentric characters.

'Vice' is the first authorized adaptation of any of author Thomas Pynchon's work and PTA (in performing his second adaptation after "There Will Be Blood") has stated that this time he'll hew much closer to the source material, which is an embarrassment of riches. ("It's like somebody dumped bags of gold in front of me and I can only take so much with me. What do I do?")

PTA has described his vision for it as being like "a 'Cheech & Chong' movie" but those who know his work can probably guess it'll end up a million miles from there. This will easily be his starriest cast since "Magnolia" featuring a mix of PTA veterans and first-timers with many more major roles yet to be announced which reveals he may also be taking inspiration from the star-studded satires of the late '60s.

After a 5 year gap between his previous 3 features, a 2014 release would make 'Vice' will be the shortest window between PTA films since "Boogie Nights" (1997) to "Magnolia (1999). To help you keep track of all the latest news on the project we've launched our "Inherent Vice" info page which we'll continue to update throughout production.

It doesn't have a home yet on the nav bar, but for now you can find it here and at the bottom of every post. Currently the page features a synopsis, work-in-progress cast & crew listing, trailer for the novel (narrated by Thomas Pynchon) and a brief timeline of the project which dates all the way back to 2010.

‘The Master' Begins Filming; Set For Late 2012 Release

The day has come. Despite earlier reports that shooting was set to begin June 13, it appears (from reports on Twitter and the IMDB boards) that filming has indeed begun on Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Film a.k.a. 'The Master'. Shooting may have begun about a week ago but it's difficult to discern the actual start date as the production is being kept tightly under wraps. Shooting locations are described only as taking place on "some waterfront and some older buildings." Fansite Joaquin Phoenix Central has received reports of Phoenix being spotted around Vallejo and also links to an article in the Vallejo Times-Herald with a few choice bits of information from Paul's longtime producer Joanne Sellar.

Playing down it's reputation as a "Scientology film," Sellar described it as "a World War II drama. It's about a drifter after World War II." The producer said location work will continue through June before the production returns to LA for the remainder of filming. She also expects the film to have a "late 2012" release. We're really not sure where those 2013 rumors came from but you can probably forget about them now. The article also includes a tiny picture of some vintage cars parked along a small residential street with the caption "Crews film with vintage cars lining Winslow Street in Crockett, Calif., on June 3, 2011." So it looks like that's our first official (unofficial) set picture.

But with the news that filming has finally begun, we'd just like to take a second to enjoy this moment. As most of you know, it's been a long time coming. And we're not just talking about the 3 1/2 years since "There Will Be Blood." This project was first announced 18 months ago by Variety on December 2, 2009 and for a while it was looking like it might not happen at all. But now finally, it's becoming a reality and nobody could be as excited about it as we are. We're just glad we could share it with you. It's on, folks.

‘The Master' Cannes Promo Art, Filming In The Bay Area?

A few small tidbits here since we've all been waiting so patiently for the last week. First up is a look at some promo art for "Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Project" which was unveiled at Cannes (and you can check out below). Likely whipped up in no time at all (since no filming has taken place yet) by someone (intern) at The Weinstein Co. to help sell the film to foreign distributors during the international film festival, the image is nonetheless exciting because it means that after nearly 4 years the project is actually happening. It's definitely a little familiar stylistically so don't expect the actual teaser poster to look anything like this.

According to some rumors on the imdb boards, (usually never to be trusted, but these seem fairly credible), an untitled film is looking for 40's/50's era extras in the San Francisco Bay Area to film in the small town of Crockett, CA in June. This seems to jibe with what we've heard about the film so far, so it's definitely a possibility and if anyone has any further info please send it along. (via @imdbLive and xixax.)

And as always, you can get the latest news on Cigarettes & Red Vines on Twitter and Facebook.

P.S.: What do you know about this?
