First Look At Reese Witherspoon In "Inherent Vice"; Bigfoot Speaks More

The New Yorker

Hey there - few things to take care of, so let's get right to it.

-Above is a pretty groovy illustration from the most recent issue of The New Yorker for a piece about the New York Film Festival, which begins this Friday, September 26. Some critical thinking has led us to conclude that the two blue figures are from Gone Girl while the two green figures are from Inherent Vice.

- The one star of the film that has spoken rather freely about his impressions from the set is Josh Brolin, who plays Bigfoot Bjornsen, of course. He had some interesting things to say in a piece about the film found in The Los Angeles Daily News recently. The bullet points:
"I read the book as fast as I could before I saw Paul, which means I might as well have not read it," Brolin, 46, admits, "I was so confused by the time he came, I was like stuttering through the whole thing. It was like trying to have a meeting after you've taken a bong hit or something.
Brolin describes the story's vibe as something in "Manson territory."
"It's during the time of of the shattering of the ‘Right Stuff’ mentality into whatever revolution that conjures in you, whether that’s the assassinations or the sexual revolution or drugs, all that. It’s that transition," he says.
"This guy Bigfoot is one of the favorite characters I’ve ever played... He’s a guy that, five years earlier, would have looked like one of the ‘Right Stuff’ guys. But because of his refusal to adjust to any future that doesn’t look like he wanted it to look, he’s kind of pathetic.”
"It’s a really circus experience,” Brolin says of the production. “It feels like traveling from city to city and putting together skits. You never really know if it’s going to work when you finally do it. And then if you’re doing something like Pynchon, which just naturally has that structure anyway, it’s sort of double wacky.”
- Last, but certainly not least, The Film Stage has obtained our first look at Reese Witherspoon as Penny Kimball in Inherent Vice. Click below the fold and see at your own discretion.

  1. Every little blurb about the movie so far has discussed how authentic it is to the period it takes place. I've seen the "time machine" phrase thrown around multiple times. All these pictures just keep making me more and more excited!

  2. I know that all my friends know about this film coming out and are very anxious to see it. But I live in my bubble with my cinephile friends. I wonder if the rest of the movie watching world knows or cares about this film in the slightest.

    1. Are you serious? "cares about this film in the slightest"? Hahahaha man, there's a reason this website exists, you know.

    2. It is the centerpiece of the festival...

    3. Almost every film or art-centric blog or site I follow has ranked it among the top of their "Most Looking Forward To" lists. If you're even a little interested in movies, you've heard about IV. But of course it doesn't even have a trailer yet, so you're right, the layman hasn't quite heard the good news.

    4. Cinephiles everywhere are going crazy for it, absolutely. As far as the general public goes, I think Thrifty's right that without a trailer or poster, there aren't many opportunities for it to build anticipation with people. Plus it's kind of an odd synopsis and it's not like the book really permeated the culture.

I think the trailer should definitely make people curious, though, especially with all the big names and the zany premise and characters. Maybe it could be one of those surprise hits with mass audiences a la "Wolf of Wall Street" last year. I'd love to see this at least become the most financially successful of PTA's filmography. I know the grosses aren't everything, but he doesn't always do so hot in that department and I admit I sometimes worry how long he can continue thriving with such ambitious projects. He's still kind of just on the fringes of the mainstream and he frankly deserves to draw bigger crowds than he does, so it would be cool to see people really gobble it up.

    5. I feel like Inherent Vice could become a cult classic of sorts, like Boogie Nights. Although I'd be super happy if it got some recognition and/or nominations at least from the Academy. I'm not holding my breath but I'm really hoping this project brings Paul back in the mainstream eye. There Will Be Blood was a pretty big step for him in that direction.

    6. Yeah exactly, and regardless, people have obviously been catching on to PTA with every film and that's only going to continue. He's not going anywhere and he's in a great position as a filmmaker, but still, the more the merrier!

    7. Interesting. Well Boogie Nights has become a beloved movie by pretty much everyone into film. Not many people don't love it. But that was only over time. There Will Be Blood is forming into an American classic. But still, that was over time. Hopefully recognition for "The Master" will also grow soon enough as well. That's the great thing about artists like PTA, their movies grow, they don't fade over the years. And that's what makes him, and his movies, so rewarding and astonishing. He is the best filmmaker alive, in my opinion. I cannot wait for Inherent Vice.

    8. I doubt Inherent Vice will be as accessible as something like Boogie Nights simply because of the book and what little bits that have been teased out of the people involved. I think it will be more disjointed— at least somewhat—to stay in the wheelhouse of Pynchon, and the books kind of trippy frenetic vibe. Of course, I have no doubt that it will be a fucking excellent movie.

  3. Reese Witherspoon is one of the worst actresses alive. That Oscar belongs to Felicity Huffman in Transamerica. Thank God she only amounts to a cameo.

    2. wow it's you again from youtube... i really don't get the hate you have for witherspoon. i mean whats the big deal? if pta put her in his movie you can have faith that she must be pretty damn talented.

    3. For one, she's a horrible human being who thinks she's above the law. For two, she just isn't good at acting to me. She was annoying in Legally Blonde. Bland in Water For Elephants. Screechy in Rendition. Over the top in Devil's Knot. Had a horrible British accent in Vanity Fair.

If she was talented, Fincher would've cast her in Gone Girl as Amy.

    4. Paul wanted her for Peggy Dodd so he obviously likes her acting.
And you all are being trolled.

  4. The other green character easiliy is Maya Rudolph.

  17. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
