And we're off!
Paul Thomas Anderson's 7th feature-length motion picture Inherent Vice has made its world premiere at the 52nd annual New York Film Festival, and yes, it was projected on 35mm. A plethora of reactions and opinions are still trickling in, as final screenings of the film will run well into the wee hours of tomorrow morning. You can find a lot of those opinions by simple punching "#InherentVice" into the Twitter search engine, but one response among both those who loved and didn't love the movie seem to be consistent: it is a wild fucking ride.
Also revealed after the film's premiere this morning was that a new Radiohead song called "Spooks" is featured in the movie (we do not know if it will appear on the soundtrack album) (Thanks Amber B!) Click the link and listen at your own peril.
PTA introduced the film to a ravenous audience earlier today, we should have a full video of that for you tomorrow. It's all uphill from here folks!

ReplyDeleteThe only rave review that I've read was the one in HitFix. It might be hard for critics to be openly enthusiastic about a film that's so openly silly.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say the majority at all. Metacritic has it sitting at 90 with 9 reviews from major publications. 4 100/100s and all 70 and over. Rotten Tomatoes is a little more sketchy at 67% but they include trolls like Cole Smithey and for some inexplicable reason gave Variety's review a rotten when it is clearly a full-out rave.
ReplyDeleteThis definitely won't be as beloved as There Will Be Blood and probably won't even have as many passionate defenders as The Master, but it's definitely not on its way to being a hated movie by any stretch. I think for the most part, this seems like the kind of movie that will get a lot of 2.5/4 star ratings. Most people finding it a curious oddity with a handful of people on the outskirts thinking it's either a masterpiece or an outright failure. Probably similar to the initial Punch-Drunk Love reactions.
I tried to create a list of links to every review I could find: http://www.papergreat.com/2014/10/inherent-vice-gathering-early-opinions.html
ReplyDeleteSaw it at the NYFF. It was great. A little disappointed about one part in the end and how it wasn't fully explained, but overall it was a near masterpiece. Another PTA gem.
ReplyDeleteGreat interview here with Robert Elswith where he talks firstly about shooting Nightcrawler and then a lot about Inherent Vice.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet...here are all (or at least most of) the songs used in the film:

Neil Young! Sam Cooke! "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamato! Also apparently that new Radiohead song is an old unreleased live Radiohead song that has been recorded by 2/3rds of Supergrass...
Will we be seeing any footage of PTA's film masterclass some time soon?
ReplyDeleteNYFF said there will only be audio, no video, but that they will post it at some point.
