Earlier this week, we came across a story in TimeOut Chicago where writer to secure the Music Box Theatre in Chicago as a venue for "The Master." The article stated that Paul was "eager" to show the film in 70mm wherever possible and that venue is one of the few places in Chicago that is "70mm capable," not to mention just being a beautiful old movie house in its own right. TimeOut spoke to the programmer at the Music Box who said that he hadn't been contacted about showing the film and had already committed to another film during the week of September 21 (when the film opens in Chicago).
Today, TimeOut Chicago posted a follow-up piece wherein some new information has come to light. Apparently The Weinstein Company "passed on the opportunity" to play the film in 70mm at the Music Box and have made other arrangements in that city. A disappointment to be sure, but the issue might be much bigger than that. The article also states that, "Paul Thomas Anderson really does want to show The Master in 70mm as widely as possible. But it’s not entirely up to him."
Yesterday I was contacted by a source close to the director who was canvassing for 70mm-capable theaters, and who’d learned about the Music Box through the post. “I showed it to Paul and he flipped out [with excitement],” the source says. Anderson apparently hopes more theaters like the Music Box will come forward. Especially with the conversion to DCP, lists like this one are out of date and incomplete. Gauging the number of theaters that can still show 70mm is essential to determining how much play the film could get in that format. Other cinemas my source is eyeing include the ArcLight in Los Angeles and the Seattle Cinerama.
But as the Music Box’s experience indicates, the Weinstein Company seems to be moving forward with its own booking plans. On Monday, I asked my TWC rep if the company knew how many 70mm prints would be made available. A follow-up query today was not immediately answered; it seems that number is still being negotiated. Please click over to TimeOut Chicago for the full article.
My source emphasizes that he’s not a party to conversations between Anderson and TWC, but he’s under the impression that the director’s push to show the film widely in 70mm has been met with “blowback.” Still, he says, Anderson remains hopeful about getting the film shown as broadly as possible in the wide-gauge format. “Paul's not one to give up on what he wants,” the source says.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
- First, read Our Guide To 70mm. Then spread the word so others will understand why it's so important that the film be shown in the best possible format as Paul intended. Hopefully this will get back to the people in charge of booking the film as well as any theatre owners who might want to consider dusting off their 70mm projectors for an exclusive engagement of a highly anticipated film.
- If you're a theatre owner capable of showing 70mm please click over to the article and leave your contact info in the comments. Or reach out to us at cigsandredvines[at]gmail.com and we'll pass it along. As the article states, "The worst thing that happens is that a month after the movie comes out, they learn of a theater that could have shown 70mm and wasn't considered." We don't want this to happen.
- If you know which theatres (if any) in your city are capable of showing 70mm film let us know in the comments, especially if it's a gorgeous old movie palace (like The Music Box). Here is a list (updated as of last December) with all of the theatres in the U.S. (and here for abroad) capable of playing 70mm. Reach out to your local 70mm theatre and find out if they plan to show "The Master," then let us know if you hear back. We'll keep a running list. 42 days until September 14th. Let's do this.

ReplyDeleteThe Cinerama in Seattle is projecting Samsara in 70mm and have done other 70mm prints in the past. I'm sure they'd be up for it!
Wait, I lied. They're doing the 4k digital projection. But I HEAR that they are USUALLY adamant about showing the actual 70mm projections. So, it's worth a shot!
DeleteAs far as I know there will be no 70mm print of Samsara, which is a shame.
DeleteI think there's some deal with Sony where they'll outfit every theater showing it with 4K projectors.
Ah, okay. Yeah, last year Cinerama hosted a 70mm Festival. So, hopefully they can hook Seattle up with a print of The Master. They'd have my money at least fourteen times over.
DeleteThe Heights Theater in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. www.heightstheater.com
ReplyDeleteJust sent an email to the Castro Theatre in SF. Their response:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words. We will make this happen if opportunity allows. Stay tuned!
Best, CT
Planning on doing the same. Hope they can come through.
DeleteI saw 2001 Space Odyssey in 70mm at Castro theatre. Mos Def worth it !!
DeleteThe Aero Theatre in Santa Monica CA (part of the American Cinematheque, which also runs the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood) has shown 70mm prints in the past. I believe they are still equipped. I can contact them and find out if they have any plans to show it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see this film played in its original format in the Los Angeles area - i.e. The Aero Theater, The Cinerama Dome, Mann Chinese, etc. I am a film student attending USC's School of Cinematic Arts, so if anyone would like me to spread the word amongst our tight nit academic community, I would be glad to accommodate.
DeleteI really hope you went and checked out that screening of "The Shining" after posting this...
DeleteI did not and now I feel like a jackass :(
DeleteAny news yet?
DeleteI remember reading five or so years ago the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston was able to do 70mm, and assume that hasn't changed. mfah.org.
ReplyDeleteCoolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA. http://www.coolidge.org/
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre in Melbourne (VICTORIA), Australia! runs Classics and 70mm Regular Prints of films like Hamlet & 2001: A Space Odyssey. Hopefully PTA doesn't forget about us in Australia! www.astortheatre.net.au/
ReplyDeleteI second the Heights Theater in Columbia Heights,MN.
ReplyDeleteI just shot them an email to both of their contact info people. Hopefully they help us out! The rest of the MN theaters on that list are either closed or have changed hands/projectors.
DeleteThe AFI Silver in Silver Spring, MD ( right outside of Washington DC proper) can screen 70mm. In fact they're running a 70mm film festival as I type this. The Master would be a great capper to it.
ReplyDeleteI am not certain, but I believe the Fox Theatre in Atlanta is still 70mm-capable. It would be a fabulous location for such a showing, and they routinely do film screenings and have summer movie series.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.foxtheatre.org/index.aspx
I've called, but their business hours have passed. I will follow up as well.
If there's anyway I can contribute to the effort, contact me at rennbrown@gmail.cmo
I second this.
DeleteAs a student in Atlanta, I can vouch for the beauty and uniqueness of the Fox. I've emailed information@foxtheatre.org about potentially bringing the film to Atlanta, but I'm not sure if it's the best email to start with. There's also the Tara Theatre as well that's 70mm capable.
Will
folsomwg@gmail.com
The Fox Theatre is a gorgeous venue and would be perfect for this screening. Also, I can't praise the Tara enough. Both fantastic venues. Please get us PTA in 70mm!!
DeleteWhat about NYC?
ReplyDeleteAccording to this excellent list, created in December of 2011...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.redballoon.net/current70mmus.html
...there should be at least 3 theaters in Portland OR that could screen 70mm (The Broadway no longer exists). Hope this helps :D
I would kill to see this in my home town. Please get The Master to screen in 70mm in Portland!!!!!!
DeleteI believe Lincoln Center in NYC can project true 70mm.
ReplyDeleteThe Scotiabank in Toronto has two 70mm Imax theatres. How willing they'd be to give up one in the face of some dumb blockbuster is another issue entirely. But who knows, maybe if this movie has a tonne of hype behind it by then & nothing else is really playing...
ReplyDeleteI would guess that the TIFF Bell Lightbox will probably be the only Toronto theatre to show it in 70mm. I'll email them this week.
Deleteimax and 70mm aren't the same, imax projectors runt the film horizontally, 70mm runs vertically.
DeleteYes. The Lightbox has an honest-to-goodness 70mm projector. As The Master is playing at the festival and the theatre has the desired technology, I would bet the Lightbox will carry the film.
DeleteThe cumberland can screen 70mm swell
DeleteCumberland was shut down by those fuckers at cineplex a couple months ago. It's going to be a condo now.
DeleteThere are plenty of options in NYC, but I would love to see it at the Ziegfeld.
ReplyDeleteWe have a true 70mm capable Imax theater here in Tulsa, Ok. Just saw Rises there and the look was stunning. I'd LOVE to see The Master there, and know quite a few who would. I'm a film critic!
ReplyDeletethat wouldn't fit the screen right you twit. I'm not a film critic!
Deletehttp://www.redballoon.net/current70mmus.html
ReplyDeletethis was last updated last december, so it should be more or less current.
The Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX is beautifully equipped for a 70mm screening, though it would unlikely be more than just a special event, as it's mainly a stage venue. There's also the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, which might be equipped for 70mm presentation.
ReplyDeleteAlready posted I believe, but definitely:
ReplyDeleteCoolidge Corner Theater, Brookline MA!
More specifically, Moviehouse 1. They show old films there, would be fantastic for The Master. Just about the only 70mm capable screen left in the area.
DeleteSomerville Davis Square cinema installed a 70MM projector and has a stellar projectionist on staff. From what I understand they are ready and willing to show The Master in 70mm.
DeleteMuseum of fine arts Houston .
ReplyDeleteTell PTA if he does show it museum fine arts Houston I will hate him forever
ReplyDeleteThe Ziegfeld theater in New York City is capable of projecting a 70mm print. I sent the company that owns the theater, Clearview Cinemas, a lengthy email requesting that they bring "The Master" to the great and large screen there (it's a one screen theater that typically brings in some great movies). If anyone else who lives in New York and who reads this post could send them an email I have no doubt that would aid in getting their attention. Also, cigs and red vines is a great site!!
ReplyDeleteAFI Theater in Silver Spring has 70mm projector. Pass it on, let's do this WTC & PTA
ReplyDeletePacific Theater in Lakewood, California. right by my house and I am dying to see this film.
ReplyDeleteSeeing MAGNOLIA at the Century 21 on Winchester Boulevard in San Jose was a formative movie-going experience for me when I was 15 years old. It was built in 1963 for Cinerama presentations, but only played 70mm films when it first opened.
ReplyDeleteI've read that the film that played the longest at the Century 21 was 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
Come to Raleigh or Durham NC!
ReplyDeleteThe historic Esquire theater in Denver is capable of projecting 70mm prints (or at least they were 10 years ago).
ReplyDeleteThe linked list of theaters, despite being last updated in December is indeed woefully out of date. Many of the theaters listed closed, got rid of their 70mm equipment, or have never actually shown a 70mm film. I'd be pleasantly surprised if Anderson could get Weinstein to strike five 70mm prints for the largest markets.
The Paramount Theatre in Austin plays 70mm editions of Lawrence of Arabia and the like yearly, so I'm sure they would gladly have a showing of The Master. It would be quite amazing to see it happen.
ReplyDeleteI live in New York City and the options for 70mm seem abundant. I'd love to see The Master at the Ziegfeld. Of course that's only one screen and no doubt this film will be somewhat long. Maximize screenings/profits with the numerous other theaters that seem to be 70mm-equipped: Chelsea Cinemas, City Cinemas, Lincoln Square. Also, consider special event screenings at the Museum of the Moving Image, Avery Fischer Hall, Gramercy Theater, and Radio City.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.redballoon.net/current70mmforeign.html
ReplyDeleteforgot to post the non-u.s. listings
The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, MI I believe has 70mm capabilities. www.michtheater.org The theater is an old movie palace in downtown AnnArbor right by the U of M campus where 'The Master' would absolutely get a huge reception . PTA bring your film and yourself to MI, man! You would get lines out the door!
ReplyDeletePlay it at the Astor Theatre in Australia! PLEASE :)
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre is a classic, single-screen cinema located in the inner Melbourne suburb of St Kilda, that has a long and illustrious history. It is the most beautiful cinema I've ever visited and plays films in their film form. Please please please :) !!
The Astor Theatre in Australia !!

ReplyDeleteI MUST see The Master in 70mm !
Cinestudio in Hartford, CT.
ReplyDeleteThe Bayers Lake IMAX in Halifax, NS, just installed a 70mm projector that is capable of non-IMAX presentations. Hope The Master can be projected there!
ReplyDeleteNot true, unfortunately. An IMAX Digital projector was installed, and the 15/70 IMAX projector was removed. A crying shame, too...
DeleteTo reply to my reply above...
DeleteMy apologies, I've done a bit of research and it turns out that they've actually reinstalled their 15/70 projectors for Dark Knight Rises, which is awesome, but that's a different beast than the 5/70 projectors that would show The Master...
Irish Film Institute - Dublin.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.astortheatre.net.au/about-the-astor/35mm-70mm-prints
I MUST see The Master in 70mm at The Astor! A beautiful film at a beautiful venue. It would be like Christmas as a child all over again - all that excitement and anticipation!
ReplyDeleteKeep independent Cinemas alive!!! We need more films like this to be shown .
ReplyDeleteAMC Loews Boston Common 19 in Boston, MA
ReplyDeleteBRING IT TOO THE ASTOR IN MELBOURNE!!!!!... sorry for yelling but it is really good and we need this!
ReplyDeleteDo it!!!
Deletehere's the website http://www.astortheatre.net.au/
DeleteThe Astor needs all the support it can get! A school is trying to shut down this stunning historical 'single-screen' cinema. Show PT Anderson's support and don't let them turn it into a uniform shop and performing arts centre. Pleaase! It would be glorious to see this film on the massive screen.
ReplyDeleteAnother comment here for The Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Australia! Beautiful, heritage theatre that screens 70mms. The Astor doesn't merely have patrons, it has parishioners who support its showings with huge zeal. If The Master screens there in 70mm, it'll not only be in its full glory, it'll be to a packed house.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, The Master would make a killing at this wonderful theatre!
DeleteThe Charles Theater in Baltimore is supposed to be 70 mm capable. I've emailed them but they haven't emailed me back yet. Will call soon and hope to get more information. I have to see this film in 70 mm!
ReplyDeleteAccording to this: http://www.redballoon.net/current70mmus.html the only place in Oklahoma that screens 70mm commercially is screen 10 at the Penn Square Mall 10--who've thunk it.
ReplyDeletehey i live there too heh... i saw the same thing. you call them to confirm?
DeleteAs far as I know the Wexner Center in Columbus, OH still projects 70mm films once in a while- I'll be emailing them immediately to see what they say (desperately hoping this will become a reality!)
ReplyDeleteOh please do show it in the 70MM format here in Stockholm in either Saga or Rigoletto..
ReplyDeletePlease consider Century Cinema 16 in Mountain View, CA.
ReplyDeletePlease consider AMC Sundance Cinemas Kabuki Theatre in San Francisco, CA.
Please consider The Castro Theatre in San Francisco, CA.
The only response I've gotten was from The Castro Theatre. They say they are willing if opportunity allows.
...still no response from the Kabuki, or Century, but I'll keep at it...
DeleteCentury Cinema 16 has responded to my e-mail. The theatre has since converted to digital projection. I believe the same goes for AMC Sundance Kabuki; no reply, as of yet.
DeleteLooks like the only theatre to have 70mm capabilities in the Bay Area, CA is indeed The Castro Theatre in San Francisco:
http://castrotheatre.com/contact.html
Vancouver, Canada
ReplyDeleteEmpire Granville 7
http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/21748
Granville 7 hasn't run 70MM in almost 20 years. They also don't have the 70mm DTS readers that this release requires.
DeleteI hope PTA is releasing these prints to venues with professional operators that will treat the film like their mother's wedding ring.
awww. good to know though
DeleteA number of the 70mm-equipped theaters listed in FLORIDA are still operational, including the Regal Shadowood in Boca Raton, Coral Square 8 in Coral Gables, Coral Ridge 10 in Ft. Lauderdale and the Regal California Club in N. Miami Beach. Whether they remain capable of projecting true 70mm is something we faithful Floridians will have to find out...
ReplyDeleteBut considering PTA chose Miami as one of the 14 cities for the sneak preview of TWBB in 2007, I am remaining hopeful for some 70mm Florida love!
The listing for the Holiday 1 in Fort Wayne, IN should be removed. It was demolished a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see The Master in 70mm. Any film projection has so much more character than a digital showing. The UA Greenwood Village 12 theater in Denver has 70mm capability. I will check with the theater and the Esquire theater in downtown Denver.
ReplyDeleteHey DroogDim...
DeleteAny word from the Esquire? I am a Denver resident and huge PTA fan. Let me know if I can help in anyway to get a 70mm print here in town. I got a blog and do reviews for milehighcinema.com - we can mobilize the forces to make this happen.
- kdringg
According to Dave, the manager of the Esquire in Denver, CO, they will NOT be showing "The Master" in 70mm. They have the projector but something about a platter not working which will not allow them to screen it in 70mm.
DeleteOn a positive note he did say the Esquire was showing it in 35mm on 9/21. So we go that going for us.
Second for Florida!!! I would love to be able to see this the way Paul wants it to be seen! Coral Square 8 in Coral Gables, the AMC Coral Ridge 10 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, as well as Shadowood 16 in Boca Raton. I'm really really hoping this works out.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it helps or what, but, for France, even if we still have any date for The Master (which is, by the way, KILLING ME), I hope that there will be 70mm projections of the film at Paris...So I just say that, here...
ReplyDeleteNorthtown Cinema, Milwaukee, WI
ReplyDeleteAfter some correspondence with The Cinerama in Seattle, I've learned from the powers that be that they "would love to do it IF it's offered" to them. They're enthusiastic and willing... Your move, Team PTA!
ReplyDeleteThe Inwood in Dallas is capable of playing 70mm films on one of its screens.
ReplyDeleteI saw that on the list! I really hope the equipment is still in place and operational since it looks like the Inwood is our only hope for North Texas.
DeleteYou know what was really sad? Looking through that 70mm capable list and seeing all the old places that are closed or gone, especially the Northpark 1&2. I'd have loved to have seen 'The Master' there. Great theater.
The Graumans Chinese in Hollywood! We still have the old 70mm projector.
ReplyDeleteI can run 70mm in my 1400 sq foot garage with a 12 foot wide screen. I have been collecting film since 1993 and am running a Century JJ-3 with a Dolby CP200 processor and Christie AW-3R platter. While I have DTS/SDDS/SR*D/CDS I don't have a DTS-70 reader for sound from a DTS 70mm print. . I hope the local theater to me the Castro in San Francisco will be permitted to screen a 70mm DTS print of "The Master" I know I will be first in line for a ticket. Lifelong PTA fan here.
ReplyDeleteJust chiming in to also support The Castro in San Francisco, who have expressed that they would be happy to show it.
ReplyDeleteMight be a long shot but City Screen Cinema in York, England! I work there and we def have 70mm. A lot of the sites in our group, Picturehouse Cinemas have 70mm still.
ReplyDeleteThe ZIegfeld in NYC is one of the last (other than the Walter Reade, probably) that can still screen 70mm. Please make it happen, it's an amazing theater!
ReplyDeleteDon't know how to get in contact with the Tara or Fox Theaters here in Atlanta, but they screen 70mm films, and should DEFINITELY make the list of screening homes.
ReplyDeleteThe EYE film institute in Amsterdam is capable of 70mm, they're planning to show kubricks spartacus in 70mm :D
ReplyDeleteOh man, i can not wait to see this!
http://www.eyefilm.nl/en
Mr. ANDERSON, i'm from the PHILIPPINES. last year i had a problem with TDKR not being shown in a 'film' projection here in our IMAXes. luckily, before the movie was released, one theater converted their digital projection to film, and i was able to see the movie projected in the way the filmmaker intended it to be.
ReplyDeleteNow if only that IMAX theater can show THE MASTER. i now have understood that IMAX is not the same as 65mm(or 70mm, still not clear to me). also, THE MASTER isn't a blockbuster studio picture. so there's no chance that it will be shown there. My only hope now is in one of our great film projection cinema. please have a rare 70mm screening here. thank you.
- Chris of MANILA, PHILIPPINES
Astor Theatre - hands down the best 70mm screen in the world (one of two that can do so in Australia). They do 2001 Space Odyssey in 70mm regularly. i was at a screening where Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood were in attendance and they sa it was the best presentation they have ever seen. oh and they don't carpet the walls like multiplexes so the sound is way better than anywhere else too.
ReplyDeleteThe sound and the image are magnificent there. Pleaaaase screen at The Astor Theatre!
DeleteThe TIFF Lightbox Theatre in Toronto, Canada. Recently built, their Cinema 1 has amazing sound and picture and one of the only 70mm projectors in eastern Canada. Since opening, they have run 2001, Lawrence of Arabia and Playtime in 70mm. If they can get The Master, I will definitely be there.
ReplyDeleteAstor Theatre for the brilliance that is PT Anderson!
ReplyDeleteYep, Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Australia would be the perfect place for this. They often screen films in 70MM (when the prints exist) and it'd look stunning in their single-screen theatre!
ReplyDeleteThe Showcase Cinema in Cincinnati, Ohio. Capable of screening films in 70mm. Also the Wexner Center Film and Video Center in Columbus. The list provided in this article offers other theaters in Ohio capable of screening in 70mm. But these two would be personally beneficial. Do consider.
ReplyDeleteThe UK distributor has decided not to make the film available on 70mm, so it looks like there'll be no screenings in the UK or Ireland on this format. Would have thought the BFI would be looking for one too.
ReplyDeleteReiterating: Northtown Cinema, Milwaukee, WI
ReplyDeleteAlready said, but the Paramount Theatre in Austin would show it in 70mm.
ReplyDeleteYep, definitely needs to be shown at The Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Australia !!
ReplyDeleteWishful thinking:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.astortheatre.net.au/
The Astor Theatre, Melbourne, Australia.
We'd love to see it at The Astor, in Melbourne, Austalia. Classic art deco theatre and people who LOVE film!
ReplyDeleteThis movie NEEDS to be screened in 70mm at the Astor in Melbourne. And not months after the release date, either. People deserve the opportunity to see it the way it was intended!
ReplyDeleteA side note for the support for The Astor Theatre in Melbourne Aus - Can somebody please get into the heads of Australian distributors that we want to see this film before the next millennium! Actually before Christmas would be nice :)
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly!! I've been calling up here, there, everywhere each week to get some little detail on who is distributing/release date..... no answers!
DeleteP.s: I absolutely love The amount of support there is here for The Astor, makes me proud to be a Melbournian... PTA if you are reading these comments, you can see how many people here in Australia want to see The Master in 70mm!! Don't forget about us!
Another vote for The Astor in Melbourne. It is such a fabulous theatre and so supportive of film and filmmakers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WLDNLPEu6Y
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre in Melbourne Australia!
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre in Melbourne Australia!!
ReplyDeleteYes!!
DeleteAstor!
ReplyDeleteJust jumping on The Astor bandwagon here. Such a beautiful cinema. Good to see already so many Astor fans here :)
ReplyDeleteLike the others above I have to mention The Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Australia which would be the perfect place for it.
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre in Melbourne, Australia screens 70mm prints of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia (among other classics).
ReplyDeleteWe'd LOVE to see The Master become one of the great 70mm films screened there!
THe Astor in Melbourne is the perfect place for this film! It's exactly the kind of old, art deco, cinema that PTA is looking for. Most importantly of course it is 70mm ready. It's one of the few places left in the world where you can see Baraka, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, and 2001: a Space Odyssey in all their 70mm glory, and no doubt The Master would be an excellent addition!
ReplyDeleteThe Astor!, The Astor!, The Astor!......The Astor here in Melbourne, Australia. The Astor has it all, the building, the atmosphere, the people, the choc tops! It's the whole experience..... :)
ReplyDeleteYes, The Astor! This is their website: http://www.astortheatre.net.au/
ReplyDeleteI've seen a bunch of classic 70mm film there and would love for The Master to join the ranks.
Also it's Art Deco architecture (similar to The Music Box)
DeleteThe Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio supports that format!
ReplyDeleteIt looks sooo amazing, I need to see this in theaters (multiple times) please let this happen! :D
Oops, here's their website!
Deletehttp://www.wexarts.org/
Definitely Coolidge Corner in Brookline MA. GORGEOUS classic house, nothing else like it in Boston. People will come out in droves.
ReplyDeleteYESYESYES. I tried posting that on here before, but I can't find it now... I sent them an email as well with this post and the chicago tribune article.
DeleteMICHIGAN THEATRE IN ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN
ReplyDeleteThe beautiful Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, California, has 70mm capability.
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly concur with the suggestions of the Astor.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.astortheatre.net.au/
I asked The Astor Theatre in Melbourne about this on Twitter. Here's their reply: "Though we do show 70mm it is unlikely there will be a print struck in Aus. No word on local distribution as yet."
ReplyDeleteSeeing this film at The Astor in Melbourne would be a very special experience!
ReplyDeleteAs already noted, the AFI in Silver Spring, MD is 70mm capable.
ReplyDeleteParamount in Austin.. Please ;-)
ReplyDeleteShould add that I have contacted the owners of these theaters (SF and Folkets Hus Göteborg) and they both replied that they need to look into the matter and hopefully get back to me.
ReplyDeleteIt would be unspeakably cool if Paul went "on tour" with the film and personally brought 70mm prints to the biggest cities that are capable but for whatever reason aren't going to show it. Just a one-night thing. *AHEMMUSICBOXCHICAGOAHEM*
ReplyDeleteAFI Silver theater in Silver Spring, Maryland has a 70mm projector for one of their screens. If you guys could help me put some pressure on them, that would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteJust wrote them! Hopefully they can make it happen.
DeleteTHE MICHIGAN THEATER IN ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN HAS 70MM EQUIPMENT AND OPERATOR. AMAZING VINTAGE MOVIE HOUSE AS WELL.
ReplyDeleteChinook theatre in Calgary, Alberta Canada has 70mm everything!! Now I have heard The Plaza and Eau Claire in Calgary also have stuff but I can't confirm those 2 just the Chinook one. And there is a huge film scene dying to see the Master in Calgary!!!!! Also the Wales theatre in High River had a 70mm not to long ago but I do know they upgraded a bit but worth finding out. Calgary needs a screening though!!
ReplyDeleteIf you can get a print to Seattle Cinerama I will drive the three hours north to see it.
ReplyDeleteOregon lost all its 70 mm capabilities! Send to Seattle Cinerama.
Agreed! I will be driving up as well from Portland if Cinerama can screen it in 70mm.
DeletePlease bring The Master to Cinerama!!
I'm REALLY REALLY close to persuading the Swedish Film Institute to screen it in 70MM. Sent SF Bio a mail, and they contacted me saying that the SFI might be willing to!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat news!

Emailed The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan and got a response from the theater's program manager, and this is what he had to say,
ReplyDelete"We do have a 70mm projector and have already begun looking into whether or not we’ll be able to make The Master in 70mm happen here at the Michigan."
Hope it works out! The Michigan Theater + a 70mm film print of 'The Master' = glorious film experience.
Agreed!
DeleteThe Byham Theater in Pittsburgh. If I remember correctly I saw Baraka in 70 mm there several years ago. Please bring The Master 70mm to Pittsburgh!
ReplyDeleteNew Beverly Cinema in Beverly Hills
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for The Astor Theatre here in Melbourne, Australia!
ReplyDeleteAs comments before have noted, this gorgeous, passionately run and well patronised cinema regularly screens 70mm prints of Baraka, Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet and Ben-Hur amongst others.
Please bring on down a lovely 70mm print to the Astor!
If 70mm prints aren't produced in the end (though I really hope they are), they do have a Barco 4K projector.

Please tell Paul's people to do what's right and fight for a Michigan Theatre Ann arbor run!!
ReplyDeleteYes! Michigan Theatre Ann Arbor-->please bring the film here!
DeleteI live in Vienna (Austria) and there is one cinema, the Gartenbau Kino (www.gartenbaukino.at) - which is capable of showing movies in 70 mm. Actually they are planning, in cooperation with the Vienna International Film Festival, a retrospective of 70mm movies this fall.
ReplyDeleteI would be very glad to catch The Master at the Gartenbau :)

So I just contacted the Swedish Film Institute (Bio Victor), and they really like this idea of having a special 70MM screening of it, and are contacting the film's Swedish distributor (Noble Entertainment), and looking into the matter!
ReplyDeleteGreat! Pleas post any information here :-)
DeleteContacted Kahala Theaters in Honolulu, which was listed among the potential locations. They no longer have 70mm projection capability.
ReplyDeleteI contacted The Virginia Theatre in Champaign, Illinois and they said they definitely feel the same way we do about 70mm projection and are very interested in doing this.
ReplyDeleteI just called UA Regal Cinema Horton Plaza in San Diego who is on the list you linked to and they do not have 70mm capability.
ReplyDeletethe Museum of Moving Image in Astoria New York, has a 70mm projector.
ReplyDeleteoh and the Avalon and the Uptown in the District of Columbia do not have 70mm projectors - the former is 35mm and the latter is DLP only
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre in Melbourne replied with this when I asked them via twitter:
ReplyDelete"Hey there, unlikely we'll be able to get our hands on 70mm! We'll certainly see what is available after release."
To PTA's people...
ReplyDeleteThese Chicago area theaters probably don't have 70mm projectors, but they have screens that would be ideal for a conversion specifically for this movie.

The Astor Theatre Australia!
ReplyDeleteThe Astor Theatre, Melbourne, Australia!! Beautiful olde worlde theatre, has 70mm, 35mm, 4K digital. I go there often, they print a 4 month calendar in colour! There is also an Astor Theatre, Perth, Australia on the list but I do not know if it has 70mm facilities. Google search reveals that it screens primarily independent and cult features.
ReplyDeleteTo PTA's people & The Weinstein Company,
ReplyDeleteWhy not delay Chicago's release? On 9/14, open the movie at 70mm locations in New York & LA, then open it on 9/21 at another 70mm theater (Seattle Cinerama?). On 9/28, another 70mm print at the Heights in Columbia Heights, then San Francisco's Castro Theatre on 10/5. And finally, 70mm at Chicago's Music Box on 10/12, then a wide release (35mm, 4k digital) on 10/17.
This type of release pattern was common in the 1970s, and was recently used by the Weinsteins for "The Artist". That opened in just four theaters on 11/25, then expanded slowly each week, with Chicago & other cities getting it on 12/23.
This type of release could work for "The Master", especially if PTA really wants this shown in as many 70mm locations as possible.
Something to think about.
Please Please Please
ReplyDeleteDallas – (Landmark) Inwood Theatre
Just contacted Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass and Somerville Theatre in Somerville, Mass and both have the capability to play 70mm.
ReplyDeleteI was just going to post and see if anyone checked with Somerville Theatre. Hopefully at least one of them will get it in 70mm. Coolidge might be more likely since Somerville's main theater (with 70mm capability) seats like 800-900 people and I don't know if they'd choose to screen The Master in their biggest theater when there's probably something else out in September (although the month doesn't look like it has anything with box office buzz).
DeleteI contacted the people at Classic Cinemas, who own the Tivoli and Lake theaters in the Chicago area, and this was their answer
ReplyDelete"It takes a special 70mm projector to run a 70mm film. We do not have this capability at any of our theatres. All our 13 locations in the Northern Illinois have been converted to digital projection. At the Tivoli in Downers Grove we can also play 35mm, but not 70.
I do not know of anyone in our market area who can run 70mm."
I'll be contacting management of the Landmark Century and Pickwick theaters to see if 70mm is possible.
If all else fails, then the Chicago area release NEEDS to be delayed to October, so that the Music Box can get it.
A quote I just found...
ReplyDelete"Dan Halsted 4 hours ago
I'm the head programmer at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland OR. We have dual Norelco AA11 projectors in our 384 seat theater that are capable of running 70mm. 70mm hasn't been run here in years, and we need to make a couple of upgrades to run it again, but if could open THE MASTER in 70mm, we would do what is necessary to make it happen. I can be contacted at dan@hollywoodtheatre.org"

The Alamo Drafthouse (The Ritz location downtown on 6th st) in Austin will be showing in 70mm, including "The Master"

I live in Winston-Salem and I heard that the University of North Carolina School of the Arts is fully equipped to show a 70mm print.
ReplyDeleteI contacted the Wexner Center For The Arts in Columbus, OH and they are hoping to get it screened there. Make it happen Weinstein Company!
ReplyDeleteImperial in Copenhagen, Denmark, has a 70mm projector and I'm pretty sure they'll show this movie in 70mm if they get the chance to...
ReplyDeleteThey even had a 70mm festival 2 years ago http://www.biografmuseet.dk/news/2009/imperial_galleri/index.htm
Deletewww.seattlecinerama.com! Would be the largest disappointment in movie relese history if they do not play the 70mm. Best presentation possible in the USA. A bit alarming that they have not announced already...hopefully PTA is kicking The Weinsteins where it matters to make this happen! Operator (Greg Wood/Gregw@seattlecinerama) has been mysteriously quiet. GOod or bad?!?!?! PLEASE make this happen
ReplyDeleteThere is a list of 70mm capable theaters in Los Angeles here:
ReplyDeletehttp://fromscripttodvd.com/70mm_in_los_angeles_theatres_photo_link.htm
Some of the theater may or may not have 70mm projection capability anymore. But a good many may still have the ability to show "The Master" in 70mm.
There's one 70mm cinema in Ireland, in the Irish Film Institute: http://www.in70mm.com/news/2008/ireland/index.htm
ReplyDeleteGuest Services at the Arclight Hollywood had this to say with regards to my query on the matter:
ReplyDelete"At this time we do not know if we will be showing this film. We are still
in negotiations with the studio. And it is very seldom that we ever get a
70mm print. Most of our films are shown in digital format. This is the way
the studios are sending us films. We have nothing to do with the type of
print (35mm, 70mm or digital) that we receive. "
MOXIE CINEMA SPRINGFIELD, MO
ReplyDeleteNEED DAT 70MM
Seek out Roger Ebert and his cohort James Bond (no fooling, that's his real name). They screen 70mm each year as part of Ebertfest.
ReplyDeleteThe Master would see an extremely warm welcome there, in the 1400 seat theatre, and within the capable hands of Mr. Bond, the film would be ensured the best care.
Is it confirmed that the UK distributor wont be seeking out 70mm opportunities? I have passed on all the info to our programming dept. who said they would try to look into getting 70mm screenings if poss. Would be a real shame as there are a few great 70mm venues and a big desire for The Master esp!
ReplyDeleteEveryone at the Swedish Film Institute that I've contacted is on board in showing it in 70mm and really love the idea...it's the damn Swedish distributor Noble Entertainment who are hard to convince, bit I'm not ready to give up!!
ReplyDeleteGood job! Keep up the good job.
DeleteVi svenska PTAfans räknar med dig
The Museum of Civilization in Gatineau Quebec can run 70mm-perf. Our film collective has done a 70mm festival there before.
ReplyDeleteThink this has been shared, but the AFI Silver in Bethesda, MD is 70mm capable, in fact, they are doing a long engagement of 70mm films right now... Just showed Baraka. I emailed them and they responded pretty promptly saying "thanks for your interest... please contact us in a week when we should know more."
ReplyDeleteThe London BFI Imax screen has a 70mm Projector. I'm crossing my fingers for a Master Gala Premiere during the London Film Festival
