WATCH: "Bridge of Spies" Q&A with Steven Spielberg Moderated by PTA

Paul Thomas Anderson sure seems to be ticking big-ticket items off the "Movie Legends To Talk To In Public" list lately, with two Scorsese Q&A's in the last 4 years and a Francis Ford Coppola appreciation back in 2011. Now, in support of his acclaimed new espionage picture Bridge of Spies, Steven Spielberg has sat down with PTA for a post-screening Q&A at the Director's Guild.

You can and should watch the full 30+ minute talk right here.

(Thanks to Mr. Raymond Ash for helping us out on this!)

And hey, you guys watch Junun yet? Drop a comment with your thoughts!

    1. Go down to the "Pictures & Video" section and just click the very first image with Spielberg and PTA. A video player will pop up with the full talk. You can also do the same with the Scorsese Q&A.

  2. Three Movie Brats down! Can we pretty please get a DePalma Q&A next!? :P

And George Lucas! He did a nice Star Wars Q&A with Nolan for the guild, maybe we can get Paul on American Graffiti....come to think of it he'd be perfect for that.

  3. Fans: this is something special.
music documentary moments, especially of Junun's story, happen more fluidly because you're filming in church. Amazing Grace is going to happen.
For my hard-earned money, the collaboration this film embodies is a magic kettle of dynamite tea. These are People who appreciate the sacredness of the space and have the goods to deliver something honest.

Junun is fast, gentle, immediate and enthralling. The ideas in the uses of sound and image are intimate and refreshing. filmmaking wise, taste, restraint, reverence, patience and enthusiasm. Jazz moments, rock moments, KISS moments, all from the vicinity and heart of Indian temple. Just see it:: Bring some red and/or green to the party. It's an experience.

I blurted this on MUBI a few minutes after finishing::

JUNUN is a gift; a round chest of gems, deep in color and texture.
Something from the spiritual side of sincere,
butterfly netting at its most innocent::
Instagram framing of Baraka reverence. Recording sequences embracing the energy of the moment and the whole. Void of any sensationalism, despite perhaps a bird-feeding drone sequence so deliciously carnal every Game of Thrones fan will experience a state of grace.

  4. I immensely enjoyed this Q&A. It's a treat anytime PTA gets to chat with a hero of his and just go berserk asking questions he personally wants to know the answer to. The Demme interview, the Downey Sr. interview, the Scorsese interview, etc. I could listen to that man talk movies, technique and inspiration all day long.

Haven't seen JUNUN yet. I know that it's available to stream exclusively via MUBI but I'm holding out hope that there will be screenings, underground or otherwise, somewhere over the course of the next few months. With any luck such a desire will not prove foolish.

Zukko's comment "JUNUN is a gift; a round chest of gems, deep in color and texture." is giving me hope that waiting for the big screen is a good choice.

    1. PTA's insecurity is really endearing. Everytime he gets to meet one of these guys he always asks them "Do you ever mistakes? Do you get tired? Do you ever feel like you don't know what you're doing?" and when they say yes, he replies "Phew, I'm so glad to hear you say that!"

I'm glad for it too because it makes ME feel less alone that not only do Scorsese, Demme, Spielberg, and Coppola struggle with artistic anxiety, so does PTA. In a funny way, just as his heroes are reassuring him, he's reassuring us :D

    2. You're right! That's is precisely what is so endearing about his interviews. He's always asking about mistakes in an effort to find out if he is doing it right.

I'm glad to hear all these things as well. And it is reassuring to hear Spielberg say he isn't a perfectly honed filmmaking machine. He does get tired. He does shoot things he ultimately does not use. His shooting ratios are not 1:1.

PTA's curiosity tracing the inspiration of Spielberg's push in shots, and his effusive praise of Spielberg's style in that regard was also something that I found rather endearing. Paul actually saying "I learned it from you" then "but where did you get it from" was a wonderful moment. It reminds me of one of his commentaries, Boogie Nights probably, where he suggests tracing the history of inspiration. Okay you like Scorsese, now go back and see who inspired Scorsese and then go back even further and discover who inspired them. That kind of academic approach of tracing inspiration is quite appealing to me.

Many times folks moderate Q&A's, it comes across as some laborious task, but PTA makes it feel like an almost selfish endeavor in the most positive sense. He uses that time to ask questions he genuinely wants answers to. That's a beautiful thing. I almost wish he would do an entire series where he interviews his heroes. That would make for a great documentary in the vein of Scorsese's 'A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies'.

    3. I totally agree with Brian! Listening to Paul speak, for him to get so vulnerable and insecure, is so ... warm. It makes me feel less alone too.

His movies also make my feel less alone. Maybe that's why there's such a loyal following for this artist. He's so unbelievably honest and humble. I couldn't have said it better - his heroes are reassuring him, I bet he has no idea that he is reassuring us as well!

  8. I love PTA Q&A's. He really uses them as an opportunity to learn things from his heroes, he's not just asking generic questions about the movie but he is trying to take a piece of their brains and become better at his craft. That's the reason why I love PTA so much, he has such a respect, knowledge, and love for the art of filmmaking.

  11. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
