‘The Master' Is Now Playing In Theatres Everywhere

Last week, Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" opened in limited release and shattered attendance records playing to packed houses all weekend long in New York and Los Angeles. Today the film expands to nearly 800 locations across the U.S. and Canada including 70mm presentations in Seattle, Boston, Washington DC, Austin, Toronto, Oakland as well as NYC and LA. For those of you outside of North America, your patience will be rewarded soon with a film that is absolutely worth the wait but for many readers, today is the day you've been waiting for.

Lucky for you, we've been preparing for today too. Last week we recalled the films' long and winding road to the screen and today we'd like to celebrate in a different way, by introducing you to our "The Master" page. There you'll find a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes info we've been collecting on the film these past few months including interviews, production notes, deleted scenes and more. For those of you have been avidly avoiding spoilers until after you've seen the film, this is the time to dive in. Here's a user's guide:
Read our brief history of the project and then relive that initial excitement by revisiting the film's teasers, trailers and posters featuring a wealth of material not seen in the finished film.

Dive into our brand new Deleted Scenes section to track all of the alternate takes, deleted and extended scenes from those clips that didn't make it into the final cut.

Read the film's Production Notes to dig deep into The Story, The Cast, The Photography, The Design and The Music, featuring quotes from Paul, producers JoAnne Sellar and Daniel Lupi, production designer Jack Fisk and composer Jonny Greenwood.

Read every interview with Paul Thomas Anderson since "The Master" debuted at Venice -- including Filmmaker Magazine, Huffington Post, Newsweek, Screen Daily, SF Gate, Vancouver Sun and the excellent must-read Village Voice profile -- or watch Paul speak at the TIFF & Venice Press Conferences or at Academy Conversations

Check out glowing reviews from Variety, NY Times, LA Times, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The Village Voice, The Hollywood Reporter and countless other critics who are still struggling to unlock its mysteries.
Watch Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman discuss their roles in the film or read the LA Times excellent profile of Joaquin Phoenix.

Buy Jonny Greenwood's "The Master" soundtrack on Amazon or stream it on Spotify.

Enter our Gone To China Contest to win a copy of the soundtrack.

If you think you plan on seeing the film more than a few times, hold onto your stubs. Personally I'm going to be rounding viewing #5 later this weekend but we have some teaser posters to give away courtesy of The Weinstein Company and we'd like to reward those hardcore fans who keep going back. (Contest details TBD.)
But most importantly, enjoy this moment. If you've been reading the site for a while, remember the long road it took to get here and how special it is to be able to see a new Paul Thomas Anderson film in theatres. As we said last week, "See the film, see it more than once, take your friends and remember that we're lucky to live in a world where 'The Master' exists." The next few weeks will be important in proving to studios that getting behind a visionary filmmaker like PTA is a risk worth taking.

And if you feel so inclined, please spread the word about Cigarettes & Red Vines. Thanks for reading, everyone.

  1. Laying in bed with hot girl. Can't sleep. She saw me reading the site. I was thrilled. She said, "Who wrote all this?" I said, "Some guy." She said, "He's troubled." I don't care, great job!

  2. No Vancouver dates, false advertising on the Weinsteins parts (again) should not be playing ads for the movie in this province if it is NOT opening. What is going on? Why is Toronto so special? So frustrating, get someone's hopes up then boom, sorry take a flight to Toronto uh --

  5. finally this movie is widely released. such a long wait. this movie is more like an altman movie whereas his older movies are totally like scorsese's goodfellas or casino. this was a difficult film to digest on first viewing. i am going to see it again.

  6. Saw it in 70mm for a third time today at Toronto's Varsity cinema. Unfortunately, the projection was weaker than it was during TIFF at Lightbox. Not only was it way darker, but the frame was a little low, so you could see a big white line across the top of the frame just about every time there was a cut. Still, great movie.

  7. Can anyone clarify the release date in Montreal? It's frustrating! I've been waiting for 21 September only to find out that it's not screening anywhere in Montreal.

    4. It's been confirmed for 5 October. My friend saw an ad in this morning's newspaper and emailed me immediately. I haven't seen the ad yet, but like Anon mentioned above, it's opening on 5 October. It better else I'll lose interest with all the frustration.

    5. Ok cool thanks a lot for confirming that, been having a lot of trouble finding info on local screenings for this movie. Bummer to wait longer, but oh well we waited 5 years for a PTA movie I guess an extra week isn't the end of the world lol

    7. I know! What a relief!! Much as I like to see it on 35mm, at this point I don't care. I just want to see it on Friday and then hope for a second/third viewing on 35mm. I'm fine with however it happens. Did you get tickets already?

  8. The Films of Paul Thomas Anderson - From Boogie Nights to Dismal Days (The Master)

My wife and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary next month. I had a Friday class in Des Moines yesterday at a hotel and we decided to have her meet me there at the end of the day, go out to dinner, go to Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, “The Master”, and spend the night – kind of an early, abbreviated, anniversary getaway. I had been watching the reviews in the New York Times and in the Wall Street Journal and was looking forward to seeing it. Fearing a big crowd I went ahead and purchased my tickets online on Thursday night — paying an extra $2. The last time I did this was for a Saturday afternoon showing of “The Social Network” and when my wife and I arrived we were the only two people in the theater. Oh well, just in case…

It’s now Saturday morning and I’ve woken up — before seven — and am trying to process what I’ve seen the night before. “The Master” has to be one of the most boring, misguided, and unentertaining movies I have ever seen. I’ll expound more on that later, but for now let’s go back to 1997 when I heard the name Paul Thomas Anderson for the first time.

I was living in the small town of Huxley, Iowa with my wife and two young daughters. I was 27 and remember seeing a review by Siskel and Ebert of Anderson’s second movie “Boogie Nights”. I was intrigued — a movie about pornography that isn’t itself pornography? Siskel liked it, but didn’t love it. Ebert put it on his top 10 list of the year. I didn’t end up seeing it in the theater (I hardly saw anything in the theater back then).

A few years later “Boogie Nights” came out on VHS and I rented it. My wife and I attempted to watch it, but the sexuality was too much for my religious sensibilities at that time (I now have a different view on the relationship between Christ and culture — but that’s a topic for another day). We gave up midway through the first half. Time went on and I got more into film. I have a job where I work a lot with numbers and can often watch or listen to things while I am at work. over the last 10-15 years I have watched hundreds of movies and TV series. Eventually I re-rented “Boogie Nights” and gave it a second try. This time I made it the whole way through and found it to be unlike anything I had ever seen before. The best word I can use to describe it is “electric”...

    1. Hey jackass, we get it. You didn't like it. Telling us once was enough. This is now your fifth time around that carousel. You're OBSESSED. Give it a rest.

Also, calling your own website "literatecomments.com" is the funniest thing I have seen in a trillion years.

      TRILLION.

  9. Man, you're old if you have been around a trillion years. What did you think of "The Master"?
