RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967-2014)

We are deeply crushed to report the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Easily one of the elite and best we've ever had. Thank you for everything, sir.

  2. What the hell was wrong with him? How do you get on smack with a social network like he had? Out of all the people who had support groups and friends like PTA and JCR and all the others I mean, you even have kids. Two fucking kids. Jesus this guy musta been fucked up.

    2. All the greats are fucked up. Think it about and think about the way you are judging the man. He was brilliant!

    4. When he came on that wall in "Happiness", we all came on that wall with him.

  3. What an impact he had on me when I saw him for the first time in "Boogie Nights". You just *ached* for his character... What a loss...

  5. This is a real tragedy. I was still hoping he would wind up in Inherent Vice. So sorry to hear this.

    1. I feel, in a way, he will be. Paul always tends to pay tribute to those he was close with.

    2. A little of Phil has always been in everything Paul has done. And always will be. He is not gone. His influence and spirit will continue to affect every real actor/artist. Not enough can be said...

  6. And Paul Thomas Anderson has lost his muse. Rest in peace, thou titan of celluloid.

  7. There has been one single time I've gone into an actual store and bought a movie and it was the one single movie Hoffman made.

  10. Cigs&RedVines has been my homepage for years now... To read the headline this morning left me shocked, speechless and in tears... Totally dumbfounded... I had to come back on and say Im grateful to have heard from you guys. Like hearing from friends... Thanks for doing what you do! Ive been crying on and off all day... so I know Paul must be near inconsolable. Like the passing of James Gandolfini, its like losing a best friend, or favorite uncle... Deepest condolensces to his loved ones... Had already planned on showing my girlfriend The Master and PDL tonight... Now its In Memoriam....

  11. so devastated. And I can't even imagine what Paul, one of his best friends, must be going through right now...my heart goes out to all who worked with and knew him.

Rest in Peace to one of our greatest actors and thank you to Paul for being the first director to truly have faith in him and bring out his absolute best.

  12. I can't express anything that thousands of others haven't already expressed, and I can't say anything that would help any of us make any sense of this.

I can only register my shock at Mr. Hoffman's passing and make a three-way date, to be carried out in full over the next several days. This date will be between myself, a bottle of bourbon and a good portion of Mr. Hoffman's filmography.

    R.I.P.

  13. He will be forever linked with Paul Thomas Anderson's indelible work. The loss is double. An accomplished actor dies in his prime with so much left to offer and Anderson is stripped away from one of his most powerful acting resources.

That this tragedy happens a few weeks before the superficial academy awards, is indicative of Hollywood's synthetic glamour. Irony and sadness repeat themselves. Enormous talent and artistic fulfilment even for an actor of this caliber seem that are never enough to caress the soul's darkest corners.

I will remember him for Magnolia and everything he did with PTA.

  14. He did great work with several great directors, not just Paul. What about his work with Kaufman and Mamet?

  15. I am shocked. He is probably the actor who has had the greatest impact on my life. The roles I will always remember:

His 5 roles in Paul Thomas Anderson’s films:

Young Craps Player in “Hard Eight”
    Scotty J. in “Boogie Nights”
    Phil Parma in “Magnolia”
Dean Trumbell in “Punch Drunk Love”
    Lancaster Dodd in “The Master”

    Brandt in “The Big Lebowski”

Freddie Miles in “The Talented Mr. Ripley”

    Lester Bangs in “Almost Famous”

Wilson Joel in “Love Liza” – Must See

Dan Mahowny in “Owning Mahowny” – Must See

Sandy Lyle in “Along Came Polly”

    Truman Capote in “Capote”

    Jon Savage in “The Savages”

Andy in “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”

He is the best actor I have ever seen. Gone far too soon. RIP

    1. You are forgetting some important ones. Father Flynn in "Doubt," Caden Cotard in "Synecdoche, New York," Gus in "Charlie Wilson's War," and Jacob in "25th Hour." Incredible body of work.

  16. "Free winds and no tyranny for you, Freddie, sailor of the seas. You pay no rent, free to go where you please. Then go, go to that landless latitude and good luck. For if you figure a way to live in this world without serving a master, any master, than let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world."
