WATCH: PTA & Jonathan Demme Q&A From '14 Austin Film Festival

Several months ago, audio from the Q&A between Paul Thomas Anderson and Jonathan Demme at last year's Austin Film Festival was made available to download. Now, video of the talk has found its way to YouTube. Notably, quite a bit of the video differs from what was cut together in the audio-only version, so it's definitely worth taking a peek (via xixax).

WATCH: PTA & Jonathan Demme talk "Greaser's Palace" At Austin Film Festival

Computer Hope
If you'll recall, PTA dropped by the Austin Film Festival last year to talk to Jonathan Demme about his career. That lovely talk can be heard here. While in Austin, Demme and PTA also co-hosted a screening of Robert Downey Sr's whacked-out 1972 Western Greaser's Palace (which, based on the footage shown, we will HAVE to dig up somehow), and discussed the film afterword. Now, thanks to On Story, that second talk has finally surfaced in video form.

The embed on the page seems to be a little sticky, but for now you can watch it HERE. The video is about 30 minutes long, but the talk itself is only about 14 minutes. Enjoy!

LISTEN: PTA-Moderated Q&A with Jonathan Demme from Austin Film Fest

Remember back in October when we announced that PTA was going to be traveling to the Austin Film Festival to moderate a Q&A with iconic filmmaker Jonathan Demme? And remember how that was the last we heard of it, save for a few low-res phone-pics of the event on Instagram?

Well, today the convo is available for free download on iTunes via The On-Story Podcast. You can click this link for the podcast's site, or you could save yourself a few steps and just do a simple search on iTunes. The whole thing runs about 45 minutes, and it is a highly candid and fascinating discussion.

PTA Headed To Austin Film Festival To Moderate Jonathan Demme Q&A, "Greaser's Palace" Screening

According to many on the ground, including the local presses, Paul Thomas Anderson will be attending the Austin Film Festival this coming weekend to moderate a Q&A with long-time filmmaking idol and friend Jonathan Demme. That talk will be this coming Saturday at 3:45pm in the Stephen F. Austin Ballroom.

On Sunday, PTA will be co-hosting a screening of Robert Downey Sr.'s 1972 film "Greaser's Palace" with Demme. That'll start at 5:30pm at the State Theatre, with another Q&A between the two directors following.

If you live in or around Austin, TX, and haven't made up your mind to get passes yet, it's probably worth looking into here. Aside from these talks, some phenomenal titles are screening this year.

And here's an outlandishly amusing clip from Greaser's Palace

PTA & Jonathan Demme Talk ‘The Master' In NYC (Q&A Recap)

Last week we told you that while PTA was in NYC for his whirlwind press tour, he also stopped by the Village East Cinema for a quick Q&A with his friend/hero, filmmaker Jonathan Demme. Though we weren't aware of the event beforehand, we did learn that the Q&A was definitely recorded so we can assume that the footage will make its way online soon or perhaps included on the DVD/Blu down the line. Until then, a reader was kind enough to send in a detailed recap of the event which is clearly the next best thing. If you haven't seen the film yet, there are spoilers below.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

I apologize for missing yesterday's update, but I think today's news will more than make up for it...I had a chance to briefly communicate with PTA on various subjects, so here's my questions & Paul's answers:

Were you involved with the TV version of Boogie Nights?
Dylan [Tichenor] and I did the tv version of Boogie Nights and I love it -- NOTHING was cut from the film if you can imagine -- It was a blast dealing with it in interesting and cool ways -- I can't wait to watch it on TV.....you'll see -- should be pretty interesting....

What's the latest on Forest Hills Bob?
No idea really, I haven't talked to Bob [Downey Sr.] in a while and I'm an awful producer. It's really just my name that's being used right now...we'll see...

Regarding your collaboration with Jonathan Demme. Can you comment on this quote from Demme that appeared in Premiere Magazine in 1998. "He's going to be writing a script set in the world of magic, against a carnival backdrop, and [magician-actor] Ricky Jay is working on it as well....."
That was left over stuff from a thing we were talking about a long, long time ago and has no basis in reality.....for now or with Jonathan....Jonathan is working on his Charade re-make and I just talk to him/consult about it once in while -- I'm not officially doing my thing with him yet -- when we officially decide to do something it has to be pretty special in my mind.

PTA also said that he is currently "In hibernation" working on a few "secret projects". It sounds like the TV version of Boogie Nights is a must see, so make sure you watch FX this Sunday. Don't forget, you'll hear any news on PTA's future projects here first!
I have more exciting news as I'm in the planning stages for the first monthly contest for the site! What will the prize be? Believe it or not, a DVD courtesy of PTA for all his music videos! PTA has put together a great DVD collection which includes all six music videos that he has directed! More exciting news on this soon.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

As promised, here's the update on all those rumors floating around (some for years) on PTA's future projects. I asked Paul about these back in December & here's what he had to say:
Lennon
: PTA has never been approached about this & said that he has no intentions to do this. He would love to make a musical & he obviously has an affinity for the Beatles, but expect an original concept that has nothing to do with the Beatles or John Lennon.
Blue Movie
: Total Film, the UK magazine, reported that PTA was interested in reuniting Mark Wahlberg & Heather Graham for an adaption of the Southern novel, Blue Movie, which details how a brother & sister from an American acting dynasty decide to make a porn film as an expression of high art. PTA laughed this off & said, "not a chance." When I originally reported this back in November, I thought it was wishful thinking as PTA has already covered this topic in Boogie Nights.
Rule of the Bone
: PTA did adapt this Russell Bank's book (Sweet Hereafter) for director Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress) years ago, but the Sony/Columbia Tri-Star project seems to have stalled. I will follow up with PTA the next time we speak, to see if there's been any progress.
Untitled Jonathan Demme Project:
There still appears to be a collaboration on the horizon that is not related to the Bob Downey, Sr. project I reported last month. I believe the project is with Universal & any updates will appear here!
I will have an image link up shortly to check the latest news on these & other proposed projects. I do not want to become a rumor mill, so anything that is posted will have to come from a credible source & won't gain validity until I have checked with PTA's camp.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Last night I had the opportunity to see Fiona Apple live in my hometown of Seattle. She put on an incredible show as she alternated between center stage and sitting down & playing the piano. Two of her band members were from Seattle, so there were many friends and relatives in the audience. PTA was on hand to see her as he moved from backstage to stage left during "Fast as You Can".
After the show, I had a chance to speak with PTA for a few minutes & catch up on the latest happenings. Here's a brief rundown:
6th Annual From Concept to Sale Conference:
PTA was there to answer questions from attendees after the screening of Hard Eight (which was incidentally shown on DVD).
Saturday Night Live
: PTA will be contributing to additional shows as he has made good friends on the show & really enjoyed the experience. More specifics as soon as I find out.
Jonathan Demme Project:
This was recently reported in the New York Times & confirmed by PTA last night. Jonathan Demme & PTA are serving as Executive Producers on Forest Hills Bob a new film written & directed by Robert Downey, Sr. "It's the story of a widower coming to terms with the next chapter in his life," producer Peter Saraf (Ulee's Gold) told New York Times. While the lead hasn't been chosen, expect quirky ensemble casting from the Chelsea-based Clinica Estetico production.
Magnolia DVD
: We talked briefly about the DVD & looks like there might be a documentary on making the film that will be included. (This is subject to change).
Boogie Nights DVD
: PTA confirmed that this will be a 2 Disc set (Disc 1 for the movie & Disc 2 for the supplementary content). I am not able to release all the info provided at this time but here is the latest features that PTA is working on.
Please remember that things can change quickly & some of these features may change. I will update this info on this page & the Special DVD Page:
This will remain PTA's Theatrical/Director's Cut. All deleted scenes will remain as supplementary material on the 2nd disc.
The Dirk Diggler Story will not be included on the DVD.
Additional deleted scenes will include Becky & Jerome & hopefully more.
Additional commentary track by Melora Walters, Luis Guzman & more!
A simple menu navigating system (PTA thinks that many of the new DVD menu screens are getting too complicated).
I will be conducting an interview with PTA a little closer to the release of the date of these incredible new DVD's. Stay tuned for more info...

PTA Speaks on Magnolia
The first PTA interview I have seen regarding Magnolia. The big news here is that Paul says that he is writing a script for his idol Jonathan Demme, but it's top secret!
The Patriot Ledger (MA) - 11/99
Magnolia Soundtrack, Aimee Mann, and another new PTA Music Video
I have just finished posting two new Magnolia soundtrack (which is due to be released on December 7) articles. One is dedicated to the creation of the Soundtrack, how it affected Paul's writing of the screenplay, and the new music video he directed for the first single, "Save Me". The second talks more specifically about Aimee Mann (who has 9 of the songs on the soundtrack) and her trials and tribulations. Both articles will be available in the growing Filmography - Magnolia section (of the website).
