‘The Master' Moves Up To A September 14th Limited Release

We did not see this coming. Goodbye October 12th. Hello September 14.

Variety says (via The Film Stage):
The Weinstein Company is shuffling its awards-season deck, moving up Paul Thomas Anderson's Scientology-tinged religious drama "The Master" to Sept. 14 and pushing back Andrew Dominik's Brad Pitt starrer "Killing Them Softly" to Oct. 19.

"The Master" will now open in limited release against Disney's animated family pic "Finding Nemo 3D," Screen Gems' action horror sequel "Resident Evil: Retribution," Summit's teen drama "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and IFC Films' collegiate dramedy "Liberal Arts." Anderson's film will then expand to additional cities beginning Sept. 21, the day "Killing Them Softly" was originally skedded to open.

"The Master" figures to be a factor this awards season, with stars Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman expected to be major contenders for acting prizes, not to mention writer-director Anderson, who received multiple noms for his last pic, "There Will Be Blood."

‘The Master' Set For An October 12th Release

Yep, this is the day we've been waiting for. "The Master," now officially titled (again), has been scheduled for an October 12th limited release date by The Weinstein Co. according to Box Office Mojo. Producer/financier Megan Ellison dropped us a line 3 weeks ago to "keep an eye on October" and it appears that date has come to pass. This tells us two things. One: once and for all (hopefully) the film's title is "The Master." And two: there are a little over 6 months (or 199 days for those of you who are counting) until the film will hit theatres presumably in NY & LA. Images, footage, promotional materials should be forthcoming? PTA, feel free to drop us a line any day now if you want to chat. (via everywhere/everyone, thanks!)

EXCLUSIVE: ‘The Master' Eyeing October Release Date

Well this was not the news we expected to wake up to this morning. Though it's far from a done deal, we've received word that 'The Master' (or Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Project or whatever it ends up being titled) is looking at an October release date! (So we can now officially put those 2013 rumors to rest). How did we come across this information? Well, by none other than Annapurna founder Megan Ellison herself, who was kind enough to drop us a line this morning on Twitter.
@cigsandredvines I know you guys are waiting on a release date for 'the Master', and it's still a bit early, but I'd keep my eyes on October
There are a few interesting things to note about this. This would pretty much rule out those Cannes rumors, which we had figured were a long shot anyway and put it on track to come out around the same time as "Punch-Drunk Love," though that film had premiered at Cannes and NYFF beforehand. Assuming that The Weinstein Co. will want to go the festival route with this one too, 'The Master' might try to score a spot at the New York Film Festival (which typically runs around that time) where 'PDL' and "Boogie Nights" both had their premieres. "There Will Be Blood" had a secret World Premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin around that same time back in 2007 but it looks like that fest is running a little earlier this year (as are Venice and TIFF) so let's just go ahead and cross our fingers that "October" means a firm release date. Time will tell. Whatever ends up happening we're 7 months away from getting a look at the film and we could not be any more excited.

‘The Master' Begins Filming; Set For Late 2012 Release

The day has come. Despite earlier reports that shooting was set to begin June 13, it appears (from reports on Twitter and the IMDB boards) that filming has indeed begun on Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Film a.k.a. 'The Master'. Shooting may have begun about a week ago but it's difficult to discern the actual start date as the production is being kept tightly under wraps. Shooting locations are described only as taking place on "some waterfront and some older buildings." Fansite Joaquin Phoenix Central has received reports of Phoenix being spotted around Vallejo and also links to an article in the Vallejo Times-Herald with a few choice bits of information from Paul's longtime producer Joanne Sellar.

Playing down it's reputation as a "Scientology film," Sellar described it as "a World War II drama. It's about a drifter after World War II." The producer said location work will continue through June before the production returns to LA for the remainder of filming. She also expects the film to have a "late 2012" release. We're really not sure where those 2013 rumors came from but you can probably forget about them now. The article also includes a tiny picture of some vintage cars parked along a small residential street with the caption "Crews film with vintage cars lining Winslow Street in Crockett, Calif., on June 3, 2011." So it looks like that's our first official (unofficial) set picture.

But with the news that filming has finally begun, we'd just like to take a second to enjoy this moment. As most of you know, it's been a long time coming. And we're not just talking about the 3 1/2 years since "There Will Be Blood." This project was first announced 18 months ago by Variety on December 2, 2009 and for a while it was looking like it might not happen at all. But now finally, it's becoming a reality and nobody could be as excited about it as we are. We're just glad we could share it with you. It's on, folks.

Check out 'The Master' cast.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Magnolia will be re-released to sell on VHS on January 16th, 2001. I don't know what additional features to expect, but I imagine that will see a letterboxed version. The suggested retail price will be $19.98. More information as soon as I have it.

Philip Baker Hall will be the featured guest tonight on NBC's Later with Cynthia Garrett. Check your local listings for the time in your area. (Thanks Jed!)

Magnolia fell to 19th place on the VHS rentals chart for the week ending September 24th.  Weekly rental revenue was 1.07 million for a total of 41 million since its release on July 25th. These numbers are courtesy of National Rental Revenue & Video Store Magazine.

I've added quite a few new pictures to the PTA/Fiona section of the PTA Photo Gallery, including pictures from the 1998 & 2000 Academy Awards. More Photo Gallery additions in the near future.

I'll return on Friday with your chance to win the new Magnolia DVD!

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Well, I finally managed to obtain the DVD sales chart (courtesy of VideoScan & the Hollywood Reporter) for the week ending September 3rd. Magnolia debuted in 7th place behind other new releases such as Braveheart, T2, Sound of Music, etc. Boogie Nights did not place in the top 20. But these numbers may be deceiving. VideoScan states that they account for approximately 70% of POS (Point Of Sale) units sold through to consumers, but they do not track Internet sales. This makes a big difference since a ton of DVD's are sold online. Magnolia has been doing extremely well with the online retailers such as Amazon.com, Express.com & DVD Empire. Oh well, if anyone out there knows of a truly accurate way to track DVD sales, drop me a line...
I've been receiving a large volume of emails regarding the hidden features on the Boogie Nights & Magnolia DVD's. I made a point of not highlighting these, so viewers would have a chance to find them on their own. So just in case you haven't found them yet, check your color bars...
Thanks to site reader Mark Nolte, I learned that Magnolia was released in Australia on VHS this past Tuesday, September 19th. No word as of yet, on the DVD release, but I will keep you posted. Here's the cover art for the VHS release (Click to enlarge):

I'm sorry to say that my main graphics designer, Ryan Worley is stepping down. Ryan has been invaluable to the site & I really couldn't have done it without him. He is extremely busy with school/work & understandably needs to focus on that. I wish him nothing but the best! Rest assured, he will still be around, helping out with the site in some capacity. So without further adieu, I'm pleased to announce that CJ Wallis (budding filmmaker & Photoshop guru) will handle these responsibilities! CJ has been very active with the site, so he's already used to my pain in the ass "creative control" over the way things look. Bottom Line: Expect the same quality & creativity moving forward.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Magnolia will be released on DVD in Region 2 (which includes Japan, Europe, South Africa & The Middle East) on September 18th. There will be a bare bones release with no extras & a special edition which appears to mirror the recent release in North America (including the cover art). I'll post reviews & confirm features as soon as possible. The movie only DVD & VHS release will feature the great foreign theatrical poster art

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Well it looks like "Paper Bag", the new PTA directed Fiona Apple music video finally debuted Monday on VH1! PTA's latest is another wonderful & whimsical film that looks nothing like the videos currently playing on VH1 or MTV. Once you see it, you will agree that it's only a matter of time before we see a musical from Paul.

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Great news today as Never is a Promise, the excellent Fiona Apple site, is reporting that PTA's music video for "Paper Bag" will debut on MTV's Total Request Live on May 25th (Check for local times in your area). MTV Latin America has already premiered the video on May 9th in Mexico, Argentina and Chile and it's been in rotation ever since. Fiona will be present to debut the video so you never know, PTA might be on (or at least there). It promises to be a "real special" video, so don't miss it!

Archived update from Cigarettes & Coffee, run by Greg Mariotti & CJ Wallis from 1999-2005

Well it looks like the elusive Magnolia DVD will be released on July 25, 2000. This according to great DVD File site. Here's their information:
In a first for New Line, they have announced their debut two-disc set, for Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia on 7/25. The set features an anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer & English 5.1 & 2.0 mixes, a making-of feature (no length specified), deleted scenes (after the main 188 minute feature), the trailer & cast & crew biographies. Retail is $29.95, which is higher than New Line's usual $24.95, but given the two discs it certainly seems reasonable. (Note: that no information has been given if the main feature is split over two discs or fully contained on the first disc.
So there it is! Before I start getting flooded with emails, I don't have anymore specifics at this time. Since it's going to be a two disc set, there are many additional possibilities such as additional deleted scenes, an extensive documentary & more! They don't mention the trailers, TV spots & "Save Me" music video, but I'm sure they will be included. Stay tuned for a subsequent update when any further information is released for this & the Boogie Nights DVD.)

It appears that the new Boogie Nights DVD will be released in June & it's looking like a 2 DVD Set! This is great news as it means there should be plenty of new supplemental material. Here is the info:
This June, look for four new titles from New Line Home Video, including three platinum series collections: Next Friday, Boogie Nights and Seven. There are no details as of yet on the exact release date and features other than the fact that Boogie Nights and Seven will be each be two-disc sets.

Sorry for not posting an update these past few days, but things have been very hectic. Anyway, don't forget the Oscar Nominations will be announced tomorrow morning so let's hope for at least Cruise, Save Me, & Best Original Screenplay. Hopefully there will a few surprises as well!
Aimee Mann will be on The View on Wednesday so check your local listings.
Here's a small article on Paul's recent screening of Magnolia at the Harvard Film Archive on 1/19/00. I  previously mentioned the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival & since then I have learned that Paul will be attending. He has been very busy promoting the movie in Japan, France & concluding at the Festiva

According to the Unofficial Fiona Apple Website Never is a Promise - Fiona's incredible new PTA directed video will be debuting on MTV during Total Request Live at 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Friday! Here's their summary of the video (they also have stills and a partial download of the video available at their site).
Fast As You Can - The Video!  As for the biggest surprise of all, we have the video for "Fast As You Can!"  It's directed by P.T. Anderson (who is absolutely crazy about Fiona and it shows!) He has created a simply dazzling video!  With the opening black & white zoomed shots, we're artfully enveloped into an intimate, fresh, and playful Fiona.  There's a seamless transition to color shots of Fiona in various areas including a garage, inside a house and in the L.A. metro.  It's captivatingly edgy, cool, fresh-looking and artistic. You are all going to love it!

Magnolia Release Date?
According to the latest issue of Variety magazine, Magnolia is still scheduled to open up in limited release on December 25, 1999 (the deadline for 1999 Oscar consideration). It would then open wider on January 7, 2000. According to the article, six films are currently scheduled to open on Christmas day, so it's very possible that we may see some movement. Hopefully, Paul and New Line decide to push the title up a bit but it's looking like a very crowded holiday season.

On the heels of the Entertainment Weekly piece yesterday. The official Magnolia website is up and running! There are two downloadable teaser's, three photos, a poster, and a cryptic plot summary. (Please note: the teasers at this site are different from the teaser that is currently playing at the theatre. The theatrical teaser does have actual footage from the movie while these two do not)
