Michael K. Williams Also Reportedly Has Part in Inherent Vice

Today, we can confirm something which has been sputtering through the rumor mill for the better part of a couple months now. Michael Kenneth Williams -- better known as Omar from The Wire, and Chalky from Boardwalk Empire -- will indeed appear in Inherent Vice for Paul Thomas Anderson next year, according to Deadline.

Williams' part in the film is still unknown, but with this development and the announcement of Eric Roberts' participation last week, it would appear that there is still plenty about this movie for us to be pleasantly surprised by in the weeks and months ahead. Hang in there, folks!

Stay tuned to Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and updates.
"The Master" is now available on Blu-ray and DVD

  1. Did they describe at all what his character would be like, or did he describe his role? I'm sure readers of the book can put a name to it.

  2. I looked into my crystal balls, and they told me PTA is gonna have a Vice trailer, at least a teaser trailer before Inside Llewyn Davis.

    1. PTA's probably drunk on the editing room floor right now. That's why the trailer's taking so long.

    2. While editing There Will Be Blood he and his crew ate nothing but strait steak and drank nothing but strait vodka

I can only assume that while editing IV, they are doing nothing but smoking pot, taking shrooms, and dropping acid

    3. Not cool. Don't post rumors (especially ones like this that appear to be BS) from an anonymous account.

    4. Don't know if you're serious there, but calm the fuck down, Brian. Let people speculate. Did he say it was a fact? No. If people wanna post rumors, let them.

    5. I was joking Brian. Chill out. What gives PTA fans a bad name is that they take themselves and PTA too seriously.

  4. Sweet news, another one of my favorite actors in now found to be in my favorite filmmaker's latest film. I wouldn't be surprised if we get the trailer in December, but what Id really love is if PTA cut us one of his own teasers like he's done in the past and surprise gift it to us sooner than that.

    1. I wouldn't be surprised if PTA just uploaded the teaser to youtube himself when the time comes. He did that for both There Will Be Blood teaser 1 and The Master teaser 1

Imagine Pynchon hiding in the background of some scene.

    1. Well, the book did have quite a large cast.

I think PTA said awhile ago that the hard part was choosing what to carry over from the book into the film. Unless a lot is left on the cutting room floor, it seems like he is retaining a lot of it, at least in terms of what I can divinate from the casting news. This could be quite a long movie.

  6. He said the goal was to make this film no longer than 2 hours.

  7. Yeah, he is probably going to Tariq Khalil. That's the only black character in the book.

this guy has already been casted to play Tariq. I don't know if PTA will be that faithfull to the book has he said, because of the interview with the guy that will play Rhus Farthington (a character not named in the book) talking about PTA let the actor make improvisations, so I think the adaptation will be more free and maybe Michael character will be a new one or another one changed a litlle bit.

      Delete
    2. Rhus Farthington does actually happen to be named in the book (in an incredibly small role that I would've never imagined would make it into the film), and the more surprising aspect is that PTA opted to cast a male in a role which was written as a woman. Farthington is the other occupier of Penny's cubicle and only other appearance is in assisting Penny get a statement from Doc about his trip to Vegas. She also communicates entirely with stares and grim looks (except for maybe a line or two) so I'm kind of shocked they didn't just through a paid extra into her spot instead of taking the time to cast it.

      Delete
  8. At least there's a little more diversity in this movie with this addition and Benicio Del Toro. PTA's movie were starting to get really really white.

    ReplyDelete
  9. First we're worried about the women, now "non white" people. People .. Paul Thomas Anderson is a white male. and that's cool baby. relax

Political correctness, and tokenism if that's word, has no place in the auteurs arsinal of creative weoponry. And say what you want about PTA, but he's a hollywood's own auteur. ( I should say the valley's own) I would like him to stay that way, there are too few of them left.

that said. Benecio and MKW are both ... very cool "non whites". and vert cool in the larger scope of humanity as well. but they are both "non whites".. Right.. does puerto rican count?

and now let the accusations fly that I am.... a toady lap dog fanboy and \ or racist

    1. I'll jump in here. I don't think that comment was an affront, it was a credit to him. It's not just about being politically correct, it's being true and honest about America's make up. You aren't a toady lap dog fanboy or a racist but I think you are content to give pta the benefit of the doubt though. i agree that political correctness and tokenism shouldn't be used just to be used. But anderson, as much as he likes to say otherwise, makes these big american movies. These are movies that are aspiring a certain great-american-movie quality to them. Acknowledging just some of the make-up and true history of america would more faithful to this country. Of humanity. Of people. He's a big shot in hollywood right now. Why advocate fear and caving to hollywood's demands at this point? He has a lot of sway with a certain intellectual class at large. Why not challenge him to take some bigger risks?

I don't get the argument that says because Anderson is white it gives him license to write to only write white characters. Carl Franklin and Spike Lee are somehow expected to make movies about white characters, why can't anderson do the reverse just once in a while? Especially with whites dominating hollywood. boogie nights had an added greatness to it because of the humanity he treated Buck, Becky, and Maurice with. That's extension has been very small since. Race and gender are important, even in a white director's filmography.

I see the above comment as giving credit. I know that this isn't the early 1990s. Hollywood has gotten more racist since, only allowing safe sanitized movies for white middle class audiences like the butler and tyler perrys movies and precious and the help into the multiplex. So there is a barrier. Let me reiterate, there is a barrier to what is allowed. But regardless, looking back on pta's filmography after all his movies, will leave certain question marks as to whether he truly captured america faithfully.

Those questions are ok to ask. They are good. Art should be questioned or else whats the use? Just to pass the time with pretty pictures? And I think it would be cool if you took the thoughts seriously instead of dismissing them. I'm open to having the discussion if you are. There are no accusations of anything here. Please don't get smear-y. If you want to write back, write back in good faith. Thanks.

  10. I would argue that PTA doesnt make movies about whites or non-whites, but about human beings in general. There's a Daniel Plainview, a Barry Egan, and a Dirk Diggler in all of us.

    1. Again this sounds nice. But I think it's not grounded in reality of our society where white life is given more weight and imbued with more emotion than black or latino life in the media....PTA is a humanist. But it's about extending that humanism just a little bit more. (If I could bold this I would). That's all I've been saying since the beginning. That's it. If people want to label me too critical for that then so be it.

      Delete
  11. wow. the liberal police.

a humanist? and then you talk about labels. jees. Labels are the antithesis of creativity. checking boxes as you think he should to represent all of humanity is the antithesis of creativity.

I don't worship PTA. I am jealous as all hell that he made himself a career that he can get a hold of a 40 year of camera and make a movie and challenging to the general public as the master.. in 70mm no less. most theaters can't even show it as intended.

He's got to be a lone big budget film maker at this point. everyone is on digital.

"it's a real film jack". "video is the future" I am just trying to make a dollar and a cent in this bidness. Hox sex action to the max jack. Butter in my asshole and a lollypop in my mouth. You think the guy who wrote that is going to do some kind of hollywood cathartic "crash" movie.

    1. wow. you argue in bad faith. How many straw mans did you just create up there? Get back to me when you want to engage with substance.

  12. ah. the force is strong in this one. you are an expert in internet comment flame wars. Straw men? this is not some logical argument. it's movies. seriously. I apologize. you have your opinions. I have mine. It's art. there is no right answer.

I will say this. the reason I am such an admirer of PTA: he is subversive. he seems to wan't to find some new path and he doesn't give a damn.

I also like that he seems to work in batches, they same way a painter might. He has this drive for these LA ensemble maximalist plots and he goes to town with Boogie Nights and then and then Magnolia. then he seemingly abandons it with Punch Drunk Love, which seemed a one off. Then he decided on 20th American period pieces with large themes. TWBB was just all that and a bag of fries in my opinion. And then with the Master he took a similar period concept but almost abandoned plot expect for the loosest of narrative and as I understand it let the actors improvise a ton. Almost the way Apatow worked with comedy when he was going strong.

Now... he's taken another left turn and for gods sake not only is doing Pynchon, but he has the blessing of the man. That is subversive. Nobody even knows what pynchon looks like. I read IV and it was ok, but I am very much looking forward to the film just to see what he does with the stoned out vibe and the crazy plot \ sets \ characters. the point is, this time, he's abandoned writing entirely and is just going to be a film maker. But he chose Pynchon. that's a big ballsy choice. Try to read gravity's rainbow. I dare you.

What will he do next? you know. that's the thing. he's interesting. he holds my interest, and never do I say.. hmmm that's contrived, or that's obvious, or he's trying to impress X, he's just doing what get's him off.

    that's subversive.

and really. a big hero here is Ms Ellison. : ) Thank you Ms Ellison. I prefer SQL Server... but... Oracle isn't too bad. Like she cares

    ReplyDelete
  13. I usually don't try to debate cats that say things along the lines of "It's art. there is no right answer." but ok I'll try.

So in your view pt anderson is subversive because 1) he works in batches 2) He varies his projects by 'abandoning' what he's done before. 3) He's doing Pynchon, with Pynchon's (the mystery man) blessing 4) He's finally abandoned writing and is just going to direct (breaking with the past again) 5) He chose Pynchon which is very telling because Pynchon is very hard to read which you try to prove by an epic dare(side note: I have read Pynchon)

If are trying to baffle me you have. i don't need to be well versed (which I'm not really, knowing about strawmen is standard 101 type stuff) in logical arguments to say that none of those points addresses anything I said.

No one is saying they are uninterested by the guy. A criticism doesn't have to be treated a giant threat to pt anderson's existence. You and some diehard fans are the ones who need to relax. If you are such a fan, debate and defend your favorite director. Tell me where I'm wrong. The thing is I like a lot of pta's work! Let me state again, I like a lot of his work. But I just don't accept everything little thing he does and every assumption in his movies. Movies doesn't need to be deified into this untouchable thing. I like to question the fans of many directors a lot not to needle them but to have a debate with people who are probably the most well versed on that particular directors career. Usually I get smeared and mocked but occasionally I have a fruitful discussion. This is not one of those.

  14. all right then, back to fighting.

the idea that he needs to adapt to meet some politically correct sexually and racial inclusive plot lines and characters.

I think it's dumb, in the same way I think the Olive Garden is dumb. I don't go there. I dismiss it out of hand and don't spend anymore time thinking about it. (I am a snob like that) In this case, since we have enagaged in a conversation of sorts (and again I apologize for my tone but it's the internet) I did think about it. I thought, could that be a valid goal if I was going to make a movie, or record some music, or write something etc. Would it be a valid goal to purposely try to be inclusive to all races and be balanced in my genders.

And the answer I come up with is no. it's contrived and pandering. You can do it, and be successful.. and have fans. And get awards, and that's fine... more power to you, but that would sort of.. conventional. and convention is boring when it comes to art.

are you suggesting that you are right and I am wrong? in our opinions about a flim maker. That' preposterous. If you thought that "A Beautiful Mind" was the best movie ever, you wouldn't be "wrong" any more than I would be "right" to snicker and judge you.. : )

That point, and my thoughts, and my disagreement with your presmise actually has nothing to do with PTA. I just went off on him because that's the subject of this blog.

btw .. Chalky White's showdown with Dr. Narcisse was pretty cool. Stare down across the street through the flames of burning bags of herion in a trash can lid, with the entire community on hand. It's your performance Mr. White... and it was. And then when Chalky was getting choked out, I was like.. come on girl. and then... she did. it was obvious but none the less significant.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Trying to afix logic to an argument about flim opinion is silly in my opinion. Honestly I'd prefer we illogically rant about our own passions toward the subject of flim and PTA and the like. That would give me far more insight into your true point of view and \ or humanity. I can see you. so I set up straw men perhaps in the hope that I will learn through watching you knock them down? I guess. It's not intentional.

I am an ass in the context of the internet, you know that much, or.. the extent of my inner ass is exposed... so to speak. ewwwwwww., In the real world I have learned the joys of being much less so.

but I'd be happy to flame on with you, as time permits, for there is a world series goign on for the championship of Major leave baseball with the potential for the Red Sox of Boster to upset the Cardinals of St Louis at the home ball field of the former (an historic Fenway Park). Though the red sox have won 2 world series in recent years, a world series has not concluded in Fenway Park since 1918. If those Red Sox could indeed clinch said world championship tonight (or tomorrow) on that historic field, in front of those ernest (and often dispicably rude) fans, in that city of Boston, this year (the year of the patriots day bombs), after finishing in last place in 2012, and suffering and epic (I hate that word) collapse in 2011, it would indeed be a momentous occasions providing much drama and resulting in much celebration throughout New England (and parts elsewhere) .

  18. Why should a movie be diverse? Why shouldn't a movie be all-white? Why shouldn't a movie be diverse? Why should a movie be all-white?

These decisions are up to the artist. No one should be barred from their artistic choices to merely pander.

If you get upset over a movie being all-white, or lacking diversity, you're wasting too much time on petty things. You may as well criticize a painting for not using enough purple.

As far a Tyler Perry. You can not like his stuff, in the same way you don't like rom coms, or other light fare, but to imply that they are somehow part of the problem is ridiculous. To imply that a black community can't have low brow middle class comedies. That's a dark opinion.

As for PTA Faithfully capturing america". What does that even mean. American has 300 M people. You can't capture it in a film. The request to do so racially implies a creative affirmative action. Tokens. White affirmative action may have it's place in the larger economy, in a creative endeavor by an wise ass auteur film makers from the valley. It's ridiculous. absolutely ridiculous.

I'm sorry but that's the kind of hollywood liberal bull shit that gives progressives a bad name.

  22. I think TWBB captured America wonderfully. Westward expansion, oil, greed and religion.

My initial thought after leaving the theater was that TWBB was a literal parable for 21st century america politics. Naked greed and resource exploitation vs Fundamentalist religion. Circling each other, knowing they share the same goal of exploitation.

Daniel Plainview wanted to co opt Eli Sunday for his own purposes, and went as far as playing along with the charade.

That's essentially the american conservative movement in 2007. right?

wouldn't it be cool if Ted Cruz showed up at David Koch's park ave residence and got killed with a bowling pin?
