The October edition of Empire Magazine has the first image of Benicio Del Toro as Sauncho Smilax in Inherent Vice, alongside Josh Brolin and Joaquin Phoenix, seen above.
Things are starting to get exciting, folks!
Thanks to @SamHaines94 for bringing this to our attention.

Interesting that this picture and the one with Big foot and Doc are both super low rez. Are we sure these were released by the studio?
ReplyDeleteThey're low-res because they're scans of the actual magazine page. There should be a higher-res version available in the coming days.

DeleteThese little photos are seriously aggravating. Gone Girl, Foxcatcher, Birdman, Maps to the Stars, all of those NYFF movies have trailers, or at least teasers. Even Chris Nolan's Interstellar got a teaser in 2013! Why is is taking so damn long just to see a sneak peak for IV? A teaser or any bit of footage? PTA's last movie had one way earlier. And IV is having its world premiere in almost a month. i don't get it. Does it want to premiere before it releases a trailer? ....ugh.
ReplyDeleteTwo possibilities: 1. Paul is still tweaking with the trailer and is making sure it turns out right right up 'til the second he releases it; 2. Paul is really managing-the-fuck out of what's released because this may seem make-or-break for future projects of his getting funded -- due to The Master bombing.
DeleteAbout PTA's films bombing, does anyone if any of his films except Boogie Nights made any money?
DeleteI know that making money is an essential part of filmmaking, but even one like The Master that bombed commercially was received so well critically I find it hard to believe that this would be a "make or break" project for PTA, especially not at this point in his career. I think that he's just being extra conservative with this project and wanted to go about it differently than The Master as far as releasing trailers and what not goes. Maybe it's due to the money factor, but I think he just wants people to be heavily anticipating this when it hits the theaters. Either way, I was a big fan of his scheme for The Master, releasing many trailers with a lot of unused footage, and I hope that we do see something for IV very soon because it is at the top of my list, and has been for about a yearn now.
DeleteJust a thought.
It's possible that warner bros has sole rights to market the film, forbidding pta from putting up trailers on youtube. Now, after seeing the film, the studio might have decided that it's a dud and does not want to waste anymore money on the project.
DeleteThere's no way Warner brothers thinks it's a dud. Thenproject was going to be financed through Annapurna but wb took production and distribution rights. So they obviously have been excited about the project and by releasing it in the heart of the awards season they had high expectations. And there haven't been any negative comments coming out, maybe people saying it experimental but wb knew what they were getting into. And it's cer doubtful PTA has anything to do with the marketing, he may have input but a big studio is going to be investing a shit load of money for marketing so will want a say in all of it.

ReplyDeleteIt's not surprising that some critics didn't like it, it's more surprising that WB would be jumping ship already. You have a film made by a writer/director who's last 4 movies have barely broken even at the box office and he's adapting a book by a recluse conspiracy theorist and now you're thinking of just dumping it quietly? Seems weird, you might as well ride the horse that you raised.
ReplyDeleteGuh! Couple of critics "didn't love it but that's just hear say".
ReplyDeleteAnyway people we are talking about the fucking academy here. THE ACADEMY!!!!!!
