THE FILMS OF PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON
PTA'S FILM PICKS
These are films Paul has mentioned over the years in various interviews
as being an influence on his work or in some cases just movies he dug.
as being an influence on his work or in some cases just movies he dug.
watched the Boogie Nights commentary recently and Paul mentions his fave commentary ever is from John Sturges "Bad Day at Black Rock"
ReplyDeleteand of course, from the same commentary, "i Am Cuba".. i'm shocked that one's not already listed!
get 'em on here!
The "Bad Day at Black Rock" Sturges commentary, I believe, is only available on the LaserDisc...impossible to find. Have been searching for years, online and in vintage record/dvd shops.
DeleteThe DVD release has some boring historian rattling on.
Let us know if anyone has it...where to find.
I watched it recently via Netflix (dvd by mail) and it had the commentary on it.
DeleteYou can find the Sturges commentary at "Cinephilia & Beyond": http://cinephilearchive.tumblr.com/post/38154370629
DeleteHere's what i'm wondering, why did PTA stop doing any commentary tracks after Boogie Nights ?? His commentaries on BN and Sydney has got to be some of the most passionate, informative and interesting pieces on film making i've ever heard and seen and its unfortunate that he stopped doing them.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, looking forward to The Master, havent been to the theaters since TWBB and there's no movie more deserving to watch in a theater than a PTA movie.
Something I have thought about before. My guess is that PTA was frustrated in his indiscretions, particularly one anecdote where he intentionally flouted on-set insurance policy (asking Wahlberg to crash the car into the tree).
DeleteThat's all I've got though.
thank you, this website has provided cara memperbesar penis yang cepat very useful knowledge for me and others
DeleteThe page is blank...?
ReplyDeleteTry opening in a browser without Adblocker. They're all Amazon links.
DeleteHmmm... I wish this was still here!
ReplyDeleteDoes the Black Rock DVD definitely have the Sturges commentary on it?
ReplyDeleteI wonder how expensive the Hard Eight DVD will get. Considering what's on it, it's a steal even at $40!
Hey how can I see the list of PTA's DVD picks? The page is blank
ReplyDeleteThank's have shared the info,, success always for the minimalist livingroom design | minimalist bedroom design | yamaha yzf r info and the website,,, and be the best to the next information,,
DeleteDidn't Paul say of East of Eden something like "I love the book, but I still don't know what they were trying to do with the movie." Why are there no links to WHAT Paul said about these movies? That would be more useful
ReplyDeleteno, he loved the movie
DeleteIn an interview with Elvis Mitchell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90uWF-UUG1E) PTA says that he generally likes movies that have only pictures and music and he mentions "Koyaanisqatsi". (but cites "Baraka" as a bigger influence.) Can you get "Koyaanisqatsi" on here?
ReplyDeleteNOTE: If you are having issues viewing this page, try turning any AdBlock protections off, as there are Amazon links to the DVDs shown here.

ReplyDeletesorry for the delay pta
ReplyDeleteIt seems like all the Links are down :(
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what PTA's favorite books and authors are? I know he's mentioned John O'Hara and Pynchon....but does anyone know of any others?
ReplyDeleteI heard PTA say he really likes the novel Moby-Dick. Interestingly, he said he didn't care for John Huston's movie version. He referenced it when asked what movie has he seen that he wishes he could have done, he essentially said Moby-Dick because Huston's version didn't live up to the novel.
DeleteDavid Goodis, Charles Fort (frog scene in Magnolia), John Steinbeck, J.D. Salinger (game show scene in Magnolia).
DeleteRussell Banks, who wrote Rule of the Bone, which PTA tried to adapt early in his career.
DeleteThanks! Is there a PTA draft of Rule of the Bone available to read?
DeleteAnd regarding, Goodis, Fort, Steinbeck, Salinger...are there any particular titles that PTA mentioned?
Thanks again for your help...
Don't know if there's a draft of Rule of the Bone online.
DeleteHe's definitely read Fort's "The Book of the Damned." He's probably read every Salinger book (there aren't many).
As for Goodis...
"I love David Goodis, who wrote Nightfall, The Burglar, Black Friday, and Shoot the Piano Player."

As for Steinbeck, here's PTA talking to Lars Von Trier...
DeletePTA: There's a collection of short stories called America and Americans, which is amazing, and I wanted to give it to you. There's a bit in it straight from Dogville, and it's meant so much to me over the past year, because he fought in World War II, he wrote about Vietnam, he wrote from the McCarthy hearings, and he saw it all. He was really a great novelist, but he was a journalist as well, and one of the great American writers.
