‘The Master' To Shoot This June With Joaquin Phoenix & Philip Seymour Hoffman

Hold on to your butts, this is probably the biggest news day of the year. According to Deadline, the stars have aligned and the project informally known as 'The Master' will indeed begin filming this year, June 13 specifically. Additionally, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are locked for the roles of The Master and Freddie Sutton. With just over a month until filming begins, expect lots of casting news to start trickling in. Reportedly Paul is interested in Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Lena Endre, and Madisen Beaty for (presumably) the roles of The Master's wife and daughter (previously rumored for the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Amanda Seyfried, Emma Stone and Deborah Ann Woll) though none are confirmed at this time.

Apparently Paul has greatly overhauled the script since last year when production was halted. The synopsis now reads "Hoffman stars as a man who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls" So even those that read the early draft that circulated last year can expect more than a few surprises from the final version. Oh, and if that wasn't enough good news, (savior of film) Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures will finance the $35 million production with The Weinstein Co. handling the worldwide rights. We should find out in the next few weeks whether or not the film will indeed be shooting in 65mm or who might replace DP Robert Elswit should our tipster's report turn out to be accurate.

  1. Yeah!!! That new description is very interesting. It sounds like the movie is more about The Master then Freddie now.

By the way, does anyone else kind of think the working title sucks? I'm sure I'll grow to like it if it's actually chosen. I LOVE how The Master is used in the script, but as a title it's a bit hokey, right? I can't think of any other title that would make sense though, so perhaps I will be forced into liking it.

  4. Perhaps PTA's friend, Quentin Tarantino convinced Harvey Weinstein to pick this up along with his western. If so, good on both of them for that. Looks like he might film some war scenes in 65mm!

  5. I think there may be some ironies here in casting Phoenix. Please note I didn't write problems. I don't see them as such. First Joaquin Phoenix was in his beginning formative years was raised in a cult, ie Children of God. Second he went into rehab April 2005 for Alcoholism. Third he's starring with Phillip Seymour Hoffman who many JP fans believe that PSH stole Joaquin's Oscar for best actor "Walk the Line" Of course that last one is only opinion. I hope its true Joaquin Phoenix is playing Freddie Sutton.
I wonder if his background could help him with the role. Lastly Don't want to be presumptive.
Uncertain of this next writing It seem to me, the script was changed to please the Scientologists. I hope I'm wrong here.

  7. I would be shocked if PTA significantly altered the script to please the Scientologists. The man has been as uncompromising as they come in the film industry. Coming off his most successful film, it would be an odd time to start giving in. Also, it seems clear that he was prepared to do another film if he could make this one his way.

  8. During the discussion with director Lars Von Trier that was recently re-posted on cigsandredvines PTA was quoted as saying this:

"...I feel the same thing about America. I'll rebel against powers and principalities, all the time. Always, I will."

Being a believer in punk morals myself, I understand him here, and it is for this quotation alone that I am assured he will not compromise a thing. He'll make it his way and his way only.

    Peace.
