‘The Master' Teaser Trailer Has Arrived

Finally, the teaser for "The Master" (yes, that is what the title is) has arrived and yes, we got fucking chills watching it. The Weinstein Company confirms that it was (much like the "There Will Be Blood" teaser back in 2007) cut by Paul. Sound off in the comments below.

Written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (the acclaimed director of, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights), this story stars Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) and Academy Award-nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line). Set in America in the years following World War II, a charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a faith-based organization and taps a young drifter (Phoenix) as his right-hand man. But as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. A truly one-of-a-kind drama, which promises magnetic virtuoso performances, the film marks the fifth collaboration between Anderson and Hoffman, following Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Punch Drunk Love.

Paul was even kind enough to drop us a line first thing this morning with a link to the trailer/site. Take it away, sir...

  2. OMG. Not the slightest bit what I was expecting. But I guess that's why they call it a "teaser" trail, eh? Unlike the teaser trailers, this one doesn't give it all away. ... Could Phoenix have *asked* for a better comeback vehicle. Just this trailer has "Oscar nom" written all over it.

  3. Not what I expected either but the teaser got me extremely excited indeed. Anyone else who thought the soundtrack sounded a bit JonBrionesuqe?

  4. Cannot wait. However, there is a small part of me that wishes the film was a bit more distant in tone, theme, and visuals than TWBB. Even musically. But I still can't wait.

  5. Oh my good God. I'm remembering watching the TWBB trailer a hundred times leading up to the opening and then seeing it on the first Friday and Saturday and it exceeding my expectations even after all that anticipation. It felt like this moment right now.

The shot of Phoenix and the other man in the room at the desk made me think of Jack Nicholson going for the job interview at the beginning of The Shining. Same 'feel'.

  7. Agreed on the nod to The Shining in the interview scene. The music, to me, sounds more distinctively Greenwood than Brion.

  8. I wonder if that's the exact same beach where Henry signed his own death warrant.

  9. When the teaser for TWBB was released years ago, I played it to death on my computer. This one is going straight to my iphone. I'm glad teaser doesn't give away the entire story...so looking forward to the full trailer. Awesome editing! Joaquin's laugh is crazy. I can already feel the intensity of his performance.

  10. Yeah, what I love the most about PTA:s movies is the music. Feels like PTA gets the same great ominous sound from both Brion and Greenwood. Even if Greenwoods music is a lot darker. But if you listen to the music in this teaser, it kind of reminds me of for example "Tabla" or "Hands and Feet" from the PDL soundtrack.

  12. I'm sure Paul checks out comments of this blog. Wonder he'd answer this, but still (Copying from twitter:)

Everything, the landscape, framing and moving objects in this teaser http://www.themasterfilm.com/ reminds me of Jerzy Skolimowski. Was Paul ever into him?

  13. This made my day. Unsurprisingly, it looks phenomenal. As with the mesmerizing There Will Be Blood teaser that Anderson released onto YouTube surreptitiously years ago, I'm loving everything about this first glimpse at The Master -- the visuals, the tone, Phoenix, all of it is just coming off so great. I cannot wait for this! Tremendously excited.

  14. Jonny Greenwood is up to his old tricks again! And, yeah, PTA seems to have settled into this weird, wonderful niche where he combines Kubrick's technical mastery with the misguidedly ambitious yet lovable screw-ups we're used to seeing in his movies, resulting in something wholly unique and entirely unexpected. I can't wait to see wait his films will look like ten years from now, particularly when you compare something like "Magnolia" to "There Will Be Blood."

Weinstein says "Master" is nearly finished. Does this mean he'll be onto "Inherent Vice" soon?

  15. I know not of these "misguidely ambitious screw-ups" of which you speak.

  16. Oh, unless you were referring to his characters. In which case, yes. Yes!

  17. Who is excited about this teaser but not watching it to stay 'virgin' who is like that, I am.

    1. Shawn,

One of my best friends and I are not watching any footage, trailers, teasers, spoilers, nothing before experiencing this for the first time. I can't believe more of PTA's fans aren't doing this. Going into this film with no prior experience is something so beautiful and raw. Completely in line with PTA's vision.

(I whack it to the stills though, won't lie ;)

  18. So I've been thinking...I wonder if this will be Paul's first film that relies on a non-linear narrative? From the looks of this trailer it seems like we might be shown Freddie's story after this? I could be wrong, though. God such an astoundingly intriguing teaser...

  19. It sounds like Paul really went to town with the Phoneix character, from all reports he sounds really fucked up and I love that he did that. Obviously the movie is going to be amazing, I've never seen a trailer like this where nothing is really revealed and yet it is so intriguing. Jaoquin looks so much like Daniel Plainview though, i dont know how PT gets these performances out of actors, they just fit right in his glove i guess.

  20. I would say it reminded me more of Jack in the interview from Cuckoo's Nest more than The Shining.
Either way. Looks amazing. Can't wait!

  25. The e-cig is absolutely the best thing that has come into my life in many, many years! A 40+ year, 1-2 pack a day smoker who has tried everything under the sun to quit and stay quit, I can't say enough good things about the e-cig!! Most everyone here has already said most of it anyway. I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth! What a relief that I'm no longer a "smoker".
