NYTimes Talks ‘The Master' With Joaquin Phoenix; 70mm NYC Tix Onsale Now

Early on, Mr. Phoenix said: “I told Paul I wasn’t going to self-modulate in any way. I wanted to just expose the id.”
Today the NYTimes posted a great (but brief) interview with Joaquin Phoenix who talks about his brilliantly unhinged performance in "The Master."  Read the entire thing here. The Village Voice also sat down with Paul a few weeks back for a lengthy interview which was also published today. There are some minor spoilers (the ending is discussed in the next-to-last-paragraph on the last page) but it's a fantastic read and easily the best of the recent interviews. We've archived it here too in case you want to save it for later.

In other news, we received word directly from The Weinstein Company that "The Master"s 9/14 engagements in New York and LA will be exclusively in 70mm. In NYC, those theatres are The Angelika, Village East Cinema and AMC Lincoln Square and in LA the Arclight (with more theatres possibly to join.) Tickets are now onsale for opening day at Village East Cinema in NYC and opening weekend at the Arclight with tix going onsale for the other two within the next week or so.

  1. Does anyone know if it will still be at any of these NY theaters on the 21st in 70mm? Is it going to be playing at Ziegfeld? I'm planning a trip up, and cannot make it for the 14th so I'm hoping to see it on the 21st in NYC (70mm of course)

    1. It definitely should be.

    2. Which theaters? I would imagine AMC Lincoln Square, and I read the Angelika (NOT a good place to see 70mm, love the films that play at that theater, but not the theater itself). I

  4. I think Joaquin was freaking out at the official press conf because he hadn't seen the film yet. it's easy to not give a fuck about something when you haven't seen the finished product

  5. He commented on it in a Norwegian paper. Anxiety. He gets extremely nervous in those situations, even physically ill.

  6. after re-watching the trailers: almost half of the scene s in those trailers didn't end up in the movie

    1. Please, say specifically which ones... So I don't get disappointed when I see the film.

    2. she wrote me a letter: the flashbacks with doris, the shot from above over the edge of the boat, the bit with amy adams is at least cut

in the 30-seconds tv spot: the diving scene, again the shot from above over the edge of the boat, the scene with the gun

2nd theatrical trailer: all the first 20 seconds, him in the car and the close-up of the woman with the tounge out, banging on the window, guys clapping at freddie, shooting with guns and rifles. This one was 80% with cut footage

i lost my ship: the entire trailer (that would be good to see in the movie because there's not a lot of pre-war stuff with freddie)

officila trailer: printing shot, diving, gun

    3. Stexdo, are your critiquing PTA's (or whoever's) choice not to include them in the actual film or merely stating a observation? You're attention to detail is quite impressive. I'm assuming you've seen the movie more than once ;)

Also, how improbable would an extended cut of the film be? Is PTA in favor of such (re) revisions?

  7. Does anyone know if the Lightbox Theatre in Toronto will be doing a 70mm run after TIFF is over?

  8. Two weeks ago while I lay in bed one night ... I watched a trailer for the master ... then I slept ... then I dreamt and then I woke up. And in that dream that I remembered, I was talking to Paul Thomas Anderson on the set of a film which at first I thought was the master, but, but, but, there was this strange scene on a sinking ship ... there were all these rats ... and the ship was on fire ... it was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen ... so I woke up and went on with my week and then I got this random email in my amazon account for this book ... this wasn't any normal book ... it was a book that had been translated into English for the first time in a 100 years ... the book was called ... Georg Letham: Physician and Murderer! Fucking dream felt real so I bought the book ... wow! It's not a normal book!

  9. Is the Village East Cinema a good choice to see this? Or should I wait for the Lincoln Square or Angelika theater to go on sale? Never been to any of these theaters. Which of these theaters is most optimal?

  10. The Village East Cinema just added FIVE more additional times to their original schedule:

    10:30a 11:30a 1:30p 2:30p 4:30p 5:30p 7:30p 8:30p 10:30p 11:30p

    Strange.

The ticket I got lists it being screened in Theater 1, which I presume is the 70mm print. The five additional showtimes overlap some of the original ones which is kind of fishy, as the other rooms are not like Theater 1 and very doubtful to be 70mm equipped. Wish some some sort of clarification was in order...

Can anyone enlighten us on this matter?

    1. I purchased tickets yesterday evening for the 8:30p next Saturday. The ticket itself says 'ADVANCED','70mm', and 'Aud 1'. I would make sure any tickets purchased specifically read 70mm on them. I hope this help. Now the real question is when to arrive ahead of time at the theatre!

  11. A friend of mine is the manager of the Village East. They will, indeed, have TWO 70mm projectors. The original times that were posted (11:30, 2:30, 5:30, 8:30, 11:30) are in the big theater (Theater 1). But ALL of those showtimes will be in 70mm.

They've had to get a lot of parts to get these projectors up and running as they haven't been used in 20 years.

  12. oh... and Village East is the way to go... if you see it in the big theatre.

Angelika is a shithole and I haven't seen any evidence that they are actually showing in 70mm. The Lincoln Square theatre is okay... but I've had so many bad experiences in that theatre, I try to avoid it at all costs. It's always so crowded and full of that UWS riff-raff.

  13. Is it only playing in 70MM on opening night? I'm on the West Coast until Monday the 17th.

  14. Village East sounds like a damn church. I think Lincoln Square 13 is the way to go. Clean and has a mezzanine; sounds great too.

    I agree Angelika is shit.

  15. I just called the Angelika and they confirmed my suspicions that they are NOT showing a 70mm print of The Master. They are showing a 35mm print. 70mm projectors are really rare and the Angelika has a lot of showtimes listed so it didn't seem likely anyway. The person on the phone confirmed to me that the Village East IS definitely showing a 70mm print, which makes sense as it seemed like they were the kinda theatre that would have that capability.

Please update this post if you see this! Angelika definitely not showing 70mm print.

  16. I prefer the Linc Sq. theater to village east, but when I went to buy tickets I saw 3 different options... One is unlabeled and the others say 'digital' and 'vip room'. Also, oddly enough the most screenings seem to be on the one labeled 'digital'. Any idea what's going on there?

    1. I'm curious about this, too. Last week, I bought tix for Lincoln Sq. for this Friday at 7:15 after hearing that they installed a new 70mm projector in the big Loews auditorium for the occasion. But now I see this "VIP Room" option has been added for the 9:30am, 4pm & 10:30pm shows, which makes me nervous....

    2. I called them about an hour to figure out what was going on. The person i spoke with claimed there is a mistake online with the listings. She told me the 70mm screening times were 12:45, 4, 715, and 1030. So hopefully you're good to go!

    4. I want people to be oblivious as to whether it is a digital or analog version they are watching and then be asked afterwards which of the two they think it is. You'd be surprised at everyone's answers.

  17. Well, I definitely want to see it the way it's intended to be seen the first time around. That's why I had to call and make sure. But I would be curious to see the difference later on. I've never actually seen a film screened in 70mm before

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think the difference is quite obvious. First of all, you actually see the frames "flickering" 24 times a second- it's quite magical and hypnotizing. Second of all, the resolution is unparalleled. Almost like watching a 16k film scan if there were such a thing- there's just so much "information" (detail).

The color space of an analog film is a different beast as well. Deeper blacks and accurate gradations. You are literally seeing it exactly how it was captured, projected right in front of you. Nothing "processed", thus nothing altered.

Also, any unique flaws that may be on the current film print you are screening is shown, whether it may be scratches, dust, grain, or hair. And don't forget the cigarette burns for reel switch-overs. A digital copy would replicate any of these "unique" flaws for every theater it is screened at.

Sitting in the back row of the theater? You get to hear the smooth whirring of the projector rolling the film right before your eyes.

      It's quite an experience.

I dare digital try to compare (not compete).
