What this release date means for the film's possible contention in any of the major festivals this year is hard to tell. The film could be well on its way to completion with a December release mapped strictly for awards consideration -- an ideal status for the Venice and Toronto festivals' summer run dates -- or the December release could be budgeting some time for additional tinkering in post-production, making the Cannes Film Festival's run in May somewhat of a long shot. Or it could forego the festival route altogether, as There Will Be Blood did. At any rate, the finish line has been charted and the countdown has begun (290 days and counting, fyi).
With this development, as well as the recent news that Jonny Greenwood has completed recording his new soundtrack for the film, it's hard not to feel as though we may be closing in on a teaser. Just keep in mind: it's a long time between now and December, with still plenty of wiggle room for the ad campaign to begin. We know. The suspense is killing us too.
Stay tuned to Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and updates.
UPDATE: We have it on good authority from a source close to the production that, despite this official release date, Inherent Vice is prepping for three days of pick-ups and reshoots in late March. So while most of the picture is likely locked and completed, there is some more work to be done here; something to keep in mind when analyzing possible festival premieres and trailer drops.
Clearly, we should also be getting some information about Paul's next project at this point. #GreedyBastard

DeleteI had a feeling WB was going to release this in December since that's when they released Spike Jonze's "Her", another unconventional comedy from an auteur filmmaker starring Joaquin Phoenix. I was kind of hoping for October or earlier, though, but at least we don't have to wait until 2017 for PTA's next film!
ReplyDeleteBad news: Too long to wait. I thought this thing was headed for a mid-to-late summer. Good news: December 12 is my birthday!
ReplyDeleteHardly a coincidence that this is the same weekend that American Hustle was released in 2013. Love that this is coming this year, but sad that the wait continues to be so long.
ReplyDeleteSeeeeeein' it for my birthday. Booyah.
ReplyDeleteAs Paul Masson said nearly a century ago...

DeleteThat's 'something' of a long shot.
ReplyDelete'fyi' ain't no word, boys.
ReplyDeleteA year from now. Shoot me.
ReplyDeleteThank you Paul Thomas Anderson for being such a brilliant artist, for devoting your artistic life to such wonderful endeavors and for helping to make the world of modern cinema such an exciting place. You give me things to look forward to. And so I say thank you. Thank you for all the hope you give to something that I love so much. The movies. Peace.
ReplyDeleteGood news: a release date.
ReplyDeleteBad news: it's not tomorrow.
So I'm guessing we'll get a trailer in May. Which is a bummer but at least we have some sort of a plan. It felt really weird that this major studio release was seemingly lost in the void. Since it's Warner Bros I'm guessing they're going to go with the Argo approach. So they'll probably just do Toronto and maybe NYC.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be weird because up till now Paul has basically done whatever he wants for the promotion of his last 3 films... really all of them but specifically Master and TWBB. I mean he cut the trailers himself and released them on youtube without any prior knowledge of Weinsteins. He also had secret screenings without Weinsteins approval. I mean Harvey said he thought it was a good thing but we all know if that wasn't PTA Harvey would've slit his throat. So is WB going to give him the same amount of free reign?? Doubt it. But it will be really fun to watch it happen. Bet you anything the first trailer is going to be really misleading and will piss a lot of people off.

I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
ReplyDeleteliver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
