PTA Served As DP On Fashion Film, Which Is Definitely Not Called "Phantom Thread"


Evening!

Today, Indiewire confirms what we've been suspecting for some months now: Paul Thomas Anderson did indeed serve as his own cinematographer on the upcoming fashion drama that has loosely (though no less affectionately) been known as Phantom Thread.

Indiewire confirms in the same story that "Phantom Thread" is only a placeholder title for production purposes and that the eventual one-sheet will bear a different name. That's just fine, though. We can still use it until we get a better one.

    If it works for Soderbergh and Tarantino it can certainly work for PTA! This only seems like a logical step for a true Arteur.

      Tarantino doesn't DP his own movies lol. If you think Bob Richardson stands around while Quentin does the job, you have no idea what you're talking about.

      I was referring to Deathproof. This may or may not be a permanant thing. It could go either way. Soderbergh (not including Uncredited roles)took the reigns starting with Traffic and never looked back while Tarantino only attempted a "DOP" stance once. Calm down.

    The Wikipedia article now has Daniel Day-Lewis listed as playing real life designer Charles James. Is that good info?

    Actually, PT Anderson acting as DP is not such a great idea. I'd rather have him concentrate on directing… As a shooter myself…it consumes all your attention and puts less attention on the actors. Even though Stanley Kubrick would occasionally shoot his own shots… He always had a DP standing nearby just in case. This may not be good news.

    As an amateur filmmaker, this makes sense to me. There were a couple times when making my first film that my DP and camera operators did not go with my vision and did not get the shot I called for. Had I been shooting everything, my vision would have been more aligned with my directing.

    As a commercial Director/DP I can say that the right AC's and Gaffer go a long way in allowing you to focus solely on composition and directing. In fact I find it's a more intimate directing experience. From what I've seen over the years, PTA has operated quite a bit and has the ability to pull this off for an amazing result.

    Does anyone know when we'll actually get a trailer, a poster, or even an official title? I mean it's supposed to hit theaters in like 3 months and there is almost nothing to go off of. I can't tell if this is just a result of obtuse marketing or trying to cover up a production problem. This is especially concerning now since all the other awards contenders are beginning to build their hype.
