The trailer, by design, is cut at an extremely fast clip, so the footage belonging to Vice compared to other films is somewhat difficult to discern. Having said that, there is an unmistakable shot of Doc blazing up a joint 5 seconds in, and then a shot of Owen Wilson with a bunch of hippie comrades about to indulge in five extremely large pizzas at 0:51.
Sound off in the comments below with anything else from the film that you notice, or, of course, if you wish to keep your eyes virgin, hold off on watching the trailer altogether.
(Thx @NickSportello)
UPDATE: At 0:41, Doc is knocked over amusingly (albeit quickly) by a cop, and a few of our readers have been kind enough to point out that the pizza shot at the end features cameo roles from members of the band The Growlers. Cool stuff.
IV (theatrical premiere): 93 days
IV (world premiere at NYFF): 24 days
Find more information about the film on our Inherent Vice page.
Isnt it Joaquin/Doc being pushed down by a cop around the 40 second mark?
ReplyDeleteLooks like it
DeleteYup. I saw that too. Definitely from the film
ReplyDeleteLong time reader here, but I felt compelled to comment today. If that's a clip of IV at 0:52, then I spy 4 out of 5 members of a band called The Growlers. Makes perfect sense that they'd be in this!
ReplyDeleteYes! Yes! Yes! The trailer is just around the corner. Awesome clips btw!
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to jump ahead of the curve because I know we're all just getting excited for this and enjoying all the buildup while we can, but I was looking at the timeline on the Vice page and I was reminded that for a little while, PTA was going between this and The Master. It just made me wonder, we don't have any ideas on a potential next project, right? Or even like, original stories that he hinted at years ago that he may go back to one day?
ReplyDeleteer... donno man. He's always talked about doing some sorta Baraka-esk film (I think he said it on The Treatment). Maybe he'll do something like that.
DeleteIf I remember correctly he had discussed doing a film about a public access television network. I thought it was supposed to be a comedy and even had Will Ferrell attached at one point, mentioned as a sort of Putney Swope/Network type thing. Forget where/when I heard it though.
DeleteWill Ferrell would be so much fun , but wouldn't it be awesome if we could get PTA doing a Robert Downey Sr homage, starring Jr.?
DeleteYeah he has been talking about making a movie based on his father's start in public access. Probably something like UHF or Network or Putney Swope set in the late 1950s/early 1960s era when public access was just becoming a thing.
DeleteI would love to see Will Ferell play a Ernie Anderson/Ghoulardi type of character and John C Reilly play a Tim Conway type character (Anderson's sidekick on Shock Theatre)
he's also talked about wanting to make a comedy in the style of "Airplane". I would love to see him do something with Robert Downey Jr, I was pretty bummed when he didn't wind up playing doc (not that joaquin pheonix won't be awesome)
DeleteHe made a brief comment in the context of an article about his Dad's work re: public access tv movie. He hasn't been "talking about it". Don't know where the Will Ferrell thing is magically coming from either.
DeleteSame goes for the airplane thing which was also a pretty off the cuff remark.
If this is any indication, a trailer HAS to be coming soon -- probably including those very clips.

ReplyDeleteIf anyone is into that more...
I think I saw Jade (Hong Chau) at 0:10. Now for a real trailer...
ReplyDeleteAre we assuming that these little clips are not in the final cut of the film?

DeleteIirc, when PTA uploaded The Master teasers, he knew that what was shown wasn't going to be in the film -- it had already been decided by then.
