Cameron Winter Film To Premiere at NYFF; Jonny Greenwood Teases Next PTA Project!?

Couple tasty morsels boomeranging around - 

1. "Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall" will make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival in just a couple short weeks! Tickets will open to the public on September 15th and NYFF's official page for the film lists its runtime at 75 minutes. 

2. In an interview with Screen Daily published yesterday, Jonny Greenwood seems to suggest that PTA is already approaching making his 11th film and they, embarking on their 7th collaboration. Here's the important parts:

“Paul is getting close to pressing the button on the next film, I believe, and I’m already trying to learn a new instrument that would be central to it..  It’s quite protracted.”

"It may well not even be a while, but he had a few ideas and I think he’s chosen one and he seems to be gaining momentum again. You think the [next] film is going to take years to do, and often they do. But then he turned Licorice Pizza around in a matter of months.”

PTA Announces "Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall" Concert Film

 

Last December, whispers flurried of Paul Thomas Anderson's presence at Geese-frontman Cameron Winter's Carnegie Hall performance, with Benny Safide and two 35mm cameras in tow. 

Turns out, PTA was indeed shooting a concert film of Winter's performance and sounds like he's four-walling it from theatre to theatre this winter for audiences to see.

PTA has partnered with Janus & Criterion to distribute this, and we cannot wait to see it!

On the way to collecting six total statues on the evening, One Battle After Another netted our man, at long last, the first three Oscars of his career!

PTA's long-time casting director Cassandra Kulukundis was also recognized for her work on One Battle After Another in the first ever presentation of the Best Casting Award:

Andy Jurgensen also took home an Oscar for his exceptional work in the editing room:

Last but not least, Sean Penn received his third Academy Award for his performance as Steven J. Lockjaw, but was not in attendance.

What can you even say? If you've followed this site for as long as we've been running it, odds are you were as resigned to this day never coming as a lot of us have also been. There's something to be said about the folly of comparing art. As the man said, there is no best. We've watched this man make classic after classic after classic for decades and yet, somehow, One Battle After Another and its reception has felt like a revelation. A new strata that it barely seems fair he can reach. 

At the risk of sentimentality, it never ceases to be an absolute privilege to have eyeballs at the same time that Paul Thomas Anderson is making movies. 

He did not need the gold to prove that, but thank god the gold found him anyway.

What a run. What a year!

Today, One Battle After Another was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, capping off a truly extraordinary awards season for PTA's astounding 10th.

This brings PTA's career nominations total to 14, and the film's 13 nods dwatf PTA's next-most-nominated in There Will Be Blood. I don't need to tell you what you already know about how much this film has landed. It's been racking up wins left and right since awards season began in earnest a month or two ago to show for it, and hey by the way it's hitting theatres again this week! Can never ride that river of hills too many times.

"One Battle After Another" Gets R Rating As New Posters Arrive

It sure sounds like PTA has stuck a fork in his 10th motion picture, as the MPA has finally, formally given One Battle After Another its anticipated R rating.

The rating is owed to pervasive language, violence, sexual content, and drug use. 

Warner Bros also recently released the pair of new posters for the movie shown above.

Somehow we are just t-minus 35 days now, folks. This is really happening!

PTA & LDC Speak About "One Battle After Another" For First Time

Good evening! 

September is close, can't you just feel it?

That means we are that much closer to the world wide release of Paul Thomas Anderson's 10th feature film, One Battle After Another.

Today, PTA & Leonardo DiCaprio inaugurated the press campaign for the film in Esquire with a really cool self-interview, complete with portraits of LDC courtesy of PTA himself.

The film's relationship (or lack thereof) to Thomas Pynchon's Vineland is touched on, as well as a maybe-surprising-ish influence or two on the new movie. The whole thing is interesting, charming, and well worth reading.

New "One Battle After Another" Trailer Lands Online

Hello hello!

If you ventured out to see the new Supes flick from DC in theatres this last week, chances are good you were also treated to a brand new trailer for One Battle After Another from Paul Thomas Anderson - and now it would appear that that trailer has made its way onto the Warner Bros youtube channel, albeit unlisted (?)

For now, it's embedded above for you to see - though I will make a humble plea that it does play well on the big screen, if you should feel like schlepping yourself to your nearest 'plex.

Additionally, WB also recently released a character poster for Chase Infiniti's character in the film...

Well then -

Warner Bros announced today that they will release a full trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's forthcoming One Battle After Another next week - and has dropped a 20-second teaser to entice you.

Today, Variety confirmed two long-speculated but previously unofficial pieces of information about PTA's hotly anticipated new one:

• It is untitled no longer! And is indeed called One Battle After Another. 
  Intense.
  
  
• To less fanfare, Warner Bros has pushed the movie back a handful of weeks to now open in wide release on September 26 from its originally scheduled August 8 slot.
  
  

Variety attributes the delay to an exciting piece of information we didn't already know:

• Warner Bros is currently working with theatre chains to retrofit their screens with VistaVision projection systems to be able to show the film properly. 
  
  

Gulp.

Beyond that, we also now know that Warner Bros has test-screened the movie a couple of times over the last month+, and while much about the outcome of those screenings is not known, there have been persistent whispers that the film does indeed track Thomas Pynchon's Vineland quite closely and that the runtime is in the neighborhood of three hours (!) 

Whether this will be a formal adaptation by way of credit is not yet clear, and whether there may still be trims forthcoming is also not clear, so do take the information with a grain of salt. At any rate, this is starting to take on a 'Willard-finally-nearing-Kurtz' vibe.

It's close... you can feel it.

Benicio Del Toro Also Appearing in BC Project, Apparently

An interesting tidbit tucked into the bottom of a wholly unrelated Hollywood Reporter story this morning indicates that Paul Thomas Anderson will be reuniting with Inherent Vice collaborator (and fucking brilliant actor) Benicio del Toro on the new untitled flick that is set for release next summer.

Images surfaced recently showing that the movie was still filming in southern California (remember, it started in late January!) and we speculated that that meant the movie was roughly now in the wheelhouse of time it took for principal photography to be completed for Magnolia.

So this would seem to be PTA's longest shoot in quite some time and, notably, THR says Del Toro will need to wrap up the other Anderson's new movie before joining BC Project.

So, assuming the production is not in reshoots, this could well end up being the biggest shoot of PTA's career.

Hard not to let one's imagination run away with itself when one considers what the size of this production will yield for audiences next year...

Untitled PTA Film Set For 2025 Release... IN IMAX

 

The hits keep on coming...

Today, Warner Bros announced their intention to release Paul Thomas Anderson's forthcoming 10th feature film...

...on August 8th, 2025... in IMAX...

Okay, so the first part feels... well, like a fucking eternity. bluntly. But in combination with the second part and in combination with the fact that this is by a million miles the biggest production budget PTA has ever had... and in combination with the fact that WB is deeming this an "event" indicates that the swings here really will be as big as we've all been guessing.

We still don't know what the hell the movie is, per se, and that's one of the most exciting parts of the PTA fan experience, but to editorialize, it really seems hard to imagine such resources would be poured into another pure Pynchon adaptation. And if it is that Vineland adaptation we've all been guessing on, well then Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy deserve some kind of medal of valor for pushing their chips in on something like that.

We here at C&RV will be perfectly happy with whatever subject matter that is ultimately cooked up here, of course.

But folks, let's call a spade a spade: this. is. major.

New PTA Film Adds Alana Haim, Teyana Taylor As Filming Begins!

Production is officially underway on Paul Thomas Anderson's 10th motion picture!

While we are unable to confirm story details (i.e. if it is or is not an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's Vineland) beyond a reasonable doubt, set photos have emerged and so has casting news.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, PTA will be reuniting with his Licorice Pizza muse and longtime music video  collaborator Alana Haim in the movie - and he has also added Teyana Taylor, Shayna McHayle, Wood Harris, and up-and-comer Chase Infiniti. Goes without saying that the nature (and size) of these performers' respective roles is not known just yet, but still sweet!

The movie had been shooting up in Norther California to begin principal photography, but according to the Humbold-Del Norte Film Commission, that unit has now wrapped and the production will be moving onto other locations.

Photos and footage from the set has become quite plentiful over the last week and we trust you are all quite adept at using your Google contraptions to scavenge, but we'll include a couple as a treat below the fold.

Long-Awaited New PTA Film Finally Coming! Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall Set To Star

Yes, we'd been hearing the whispers just like you... 

but then the actors strike happened... 

on top of the writers strike... 

PTA's long-gestating Licorice Pizza follow-up felt like it was in a precarious place. 

But the project that was hinted at gearing up as long ago as November 2022 finally appears to be at our door step, and per Deadline, it just might be a doozy (bold emphasis below is ours):

Warner Bros has Paul Thomas Anderson set to direct Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio & Sean Penn and Oscar host Regina Hall in an untitled film that will begin production January 21 in California. Anderson wrote the script, and he will produce the film with Sara Murphy.

The film is currently untitled and they’re keeping the logline under wraps. We have learned that it is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one that PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget. It came out of a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chair/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy built making PTA’s last film, Licorice Pizza, while they ran MGM. That film got three Oscar noms for Best Picture, and Best Screenplay and Best Director for PTA. While DiCaprio, Penn and Hall are the leads, the new film will have a big ensemble cast that is still falling into place. Anderson has done ensemble in the past, notably with Boogie Nights, the film that De Luca shepherded when he headed production at New Line.

uhhh... Leo & Sean Penn? & Regina Hall? & a big budget?? & his first use of contemporary setting in over 20 years????

Untitled PTA #10 is already sounding... significant.

Assuming Deadline's forecast of the film starting principal photography in just under two weeks (!) is still on track, I think it's fair to expect at least some additional casting details to slip through the grapevine in the quite near future, but we shall see!

New Untitled PTA Project Eyeing Summer 2023 Shoot?

Hope you had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday, long time no see!

This morning, multiple outlets reported news of a casting call out to an "UNTITLED CK/PTA STUDIO FEATURE FILM" on the film and television casting resource website Actorsaccess.com.

While other substantiating details remain thin, Paul Thomas Anderson's longtime casting director, Cassandra Kulukundis (the eponymous CK referenced), is indeed associated with the listing. 

What we do know is:

- the  role calls for a mixed-ethnicity teenage girl proficient in martial arts (!)

- the project in question eyes a July 1, 2023 start date.

While PTA has been known of late to take a decent amount of time between projects, he (somewhat uncharacteristically) alluded during both the Phantom Thread and Licorice Pizza press tours to having a long-gestating project in the hopper, so this development is not altogether surprising, but nevertheless still very exciting!

RIP Philip Baker Hall (1931 - 2022)

 

Today we've lost a great one.

Journeyman thespian and PTA favorite Philip Baker Hall has passed away at the age of 90. It's really hard to overstate the significance Hall's otherworldly acting abilities had on not just Paul Thomas Anderson's first three features but on damn near every project he ever endeavored to take on, no matter the size of role. His gravitas and grace and wry wit will be sorely missed but never forgotten and hopefully discovered anew by generations to come.

Rest easy, sir.
