Jonny Greenwood Returning To Score Inherent Vice

We won't kid you guys: For pretty obvious reasons, it's been a somber week here at C&RV.

Fortunately, today some bright (if seemingly inevitable) news has arrived at our desks via Film Music Reporter to help keep our chins up: Jonny Greenwood, as suspected for months now, will in fact be reteaming with Paul Thomas Anderson to lend music to Inherent Vice, marking their third collaboration in a row. Recording sessions are expected to take place this month with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. For those not familiar with the phases of post-production on a movie, once scoring has begun in earnest, it generally means that the film has locked picture and the final edit is in place(!)

But don't get too excited: scoring/mixing can still be a pretty laborious and time consuming process, and it could very well be a while before we see any footage. Regardless, we are now a few steps closer to a brand new motion picture from Paul Thomas Anderson!

Stay tuned to Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and updates.

  1. I know that game. I'm currently in the sound mixing/ scoring stage of my latest film and it can be quite a headache. It's my least favorite part of film-making.

  2. Starting to think there's a chance that IV might be at Cannes now.

  3. Cool...I have no idea how an orchestra fits into Inherent Vice, seemed more like some crazy surf tunes filled the atmosphere. But if it's PTA & Greenwood, well, so far so good.

    1. Johnny likes surf. He also likes reggae. And remember he's an innovator who likes to play with genres. I'm sure he'll give us something we'll never forget!

  7. Check out Spooks, an unreleased instrumental that Radiohead played live a couple of times in 2006:

Might give us an idea of how the soundtrack will sound like (it's probably going to be more chilled though).

    1. something like that would be perfect!! I was picturing the song "Bamboo" by Johnny and the Hurricanes being the score for some reason (it is mentioned in the book) and that spooks sounds similar

  10. http://sinfinimusic.com/uk/features/interviews/composer-interviews/jonny-greenwood According to this interview with Greenwood, he " finished recording a soundtrack last week for Paul Thomas Anderson's next film Inherent Vice. We recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Clio Gould - they were fantastic." So it must be much closer now. :)

  11. Jonny Greenwood performing new material with the London Contempory orchestra. Doesn't really seem like it's for Inherent Vice but you never know.

  12. Maybe I don't follow these things closely enough, but was there some sort of falling out between PTA and Jon Brion? While I appreciated Greenwood's work on Blood and Master, I am a huge Jon Brion fan, and was hoping that, given the more quirky leanings of a project like Inherent Vice, maybe Brion would've gotten the job instead of Greenwood.

    1. I'm curious about that too. Does anyone know if PTA and Brion will ever work together again? And if they won't can you tell us why?

  14. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
