Katherine Waterston Lands Female Lead in Inherent Vice

As Paul Thomas Anderson's seventh feature film enters principle photography this week, it would appear some final casting decisions are making their way through the woodworks. Via Deadline, Katherine Waterston, of Being Flynn and Being Sam Waterston's spawn fame, is reportedly set to nab the female lead in Inherent Vice as Shasta Fay.

Waterston's casting marks down yet another newcomer into the PTA fold so far for the film, joining the likes of Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Benicio Del ToroJosh Brolin, and (probably) Sean Penn in chewing some scenery for the man himself for the very first time.

Make sure to keep checking in for news as it continues to trickle in from the production over the coming days/weeks/months. Things are just getting started!

Stay tuned to Twitter and Facebook for the latest news and updates.
"The Master" is now available on Blu-ray and DVD

  1. I was thinking Witherspoon was gonna play Shasta, so I wonder who she's playing after all? Haven't seen or can't remember Waterston in anything but I trust PTA to get a great performance out of her.

  4. I think Waterston's going to be playing Trillium, not Shasta. I don't know why, it just feels like that would fit better.

    1. Doubt it, this is coming from Deadline which is pretty much as reliable as it gets.

    2. They still screw up. There was a joke story last year about James Cameron wanting to make another Alien prequel if Prometheus was successful that Deadline picked up as breaking news

  5. This chick is smoking hot and totally unknowable- just like Shasta. I figured Reese is a bit loose to play Shasta

  6. I was picturing Bridget Fonda circa JACKIE BROWN or that type...maybe Greta Gerwig if she could portray a ditzy blonde beach bunny type - it'd be a challenge for sure

  7. Great that Witherspoon isn't Shasta and will get the very minor role of Sloane. She's just not a good actress. PTA certainly knows how to cast. Waterston was amazing in Michael Clayton.

    1. characters in the film will be based on characters created by the american novelist thomas pynchon

    2. That's correct, and the two previous projects he took on were also ones that involved white people exclusively. Not complaining per se, just making an observation that also works as a joke. He and Malick are the best film-makers I've come across, and I could say the same thing about him too.

Jokes are commonly born of some degree of frustration, and it's been gnawing at me for some time now that this country's films, from the awfullest and most commercial to the best and smallest, are so terribly and persistently out of date with its demographics.

    4. I guess you've never seen Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, or Magnolia, Brian?

Anderson certainly is contributing to race equality IRL, if you know what I mean.

Certainly the time period in which his last two films were set dictate certain characters.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree in this filmmaker's regard.

  11. hm, i suppose its important to remember that anderson is white and was reared in a predominately white suburban area, so his films, ideologically, will most likely reflect this.
as for the 2 previous films, one was about an oilman and his company at the turn of the 20th century--pretty white. the other a new age religion in 1950s america where segregation was in full effect.

i think if you are looking for some kind of contrived multiculturalism that contradicts the essence of the story at hand, anderson is prob not for you.

as for malick, he really had a very nice representation of american indians, maybe the best by a white director, in my opinion

Might Witherspoon have been dropped from this project? Might she have been originally cast as Shasta Fay and then after a couple of weeks of rehearsals Paul wasn't "feeling it" and dropped her? Then he cast this newcomer.

The reason I ask is because I see Witherspoon is now travelling to Paris with her daughter and all week she's been out and about in LA shopping. It doesn't seem like she is preparing that hard for this film, especially now that it's begun filming.

    1. I actually kinda hope so. It's a little anti-climactic and disappointing that she's not taking on the lead role. Feels like she's kinda too big a name to play second fiddle to a relative newcomer and I mean that in the most respectful way possible. Can't comment on her suitability as Shasta since I haven't read the book but was really looking forward to seeing her stretch herself.

Nevertheless, Paul has always got his casting spot-on. He's one of the best around at doing that so in him we should trust..

    2. It may be misleading to say Shasta is the "lead," in the traditional sense. If there is a female lead... I kind of don't think it is her. She is more talked about and referenced than actually active. I think these outlets are calling the Shasta role the lead out of desperation. IMO Shasta, Penny, Hope anddd probably forgetting others are all supporting--no lead.
But that's weird about the Paris thing!

    3. Or it could be that she's playing Coy's wife and they aren't filming that stuff right away. Owen Wilson is playing Coy and he's out promoting another film with Vince Vaughn, so that might explain it.

  13. Not sure how reliable this is, but I heard a rumor that Joaquin Pheonix would be re-teaming with Danny DeVito for a new project. Could they mean Inherent Vice?

    1. yeah i saw that on Joaquin's fan page. Could be inherent vice that would be awesome

    2. have a question where did you read that Joaquin and danny DeVito teaming up for a project?? the only time I saw them together was in ISH is that the project you are talking about??

      Delete
    3. well..i don't really like devito but pta could get an award worthy performance from falling frogs so i'm ok with him in IV if it's true

      Delete
    4. i liked to think that since pta was attached to that power play project with jack nicholson he would appear in one of his films eventually..and he would be genius as mickey wolfmann...but i guess he really retired...i don't like devito so much either...
