PTA Produces Score-less Print of "Punch-Drunk Love" For Screening With Live Orchestra

- Having now done several successful screenings of There Will Be Blood with live orchestral performances, it would appear PTA is broadening the playing field a bit. Today, Wordless Music has announced there will be a pair of live performances of Jon Brion's original score for Punch-Drunk Love at screenings in Los Angeles and New York on March 5 and March 19, respectively.

What's more, Wordless Music has partnered with PTA and Sony Pictures to produce a special print of Punch-Drunk for the performances that has no score whatsoever (and can you imagine how that movie plays without music?)

Tickets for both the special engagements will go on sale this coming Tuesday, December 15.

- Also passed our way recently: the great Prince Charles Cinema in London will be holding a PTA retrospective starting in January, with all seven feature films scheduled to screen. Though Hard Eight will sadly be a DCP presentation, all other movies will be shown on film (including, yes, The Master in 70mm.)

"Junun" Now Available To Buy Or Rent On iTunes; New Outtake From Film Surfaces

Now that Junun's 30 days in the spotlight over at Mubi have lapsed, couple of you have been wondering what the fate of the film's availability moving forward will be -- and those folks should be pleased to know that the film (as well as the album) is now available for purchase on iTunes.

What's more, Nonesuch has released an outtake performance that didn't make the final version of the movie but is still remarkably beautiful/hypnotic/wonderful. Peep it here:

PTA Reportedly Not Directing Robert Downey Jr.'s Live-Action "Pinocchio"

The word for now is that Paul Thomas Anderson will in fact not be directing Robert Downey Jr.'s live-action Pinocchio remake, via Wrap reporter Jeff Sneider. Since PTA's involvement as director of the picture was always indeterminate, we're going to assume he's still on board to pen the screenplay until further notice.

So, Movie 8 is, once again, anybody's guess... but isn't that the fun part?

Paul Thomas Anderson sure seems to be ticking big-ticket items off the "Movie Legends To Talk To In Public" list lately, with two Scorsese Q&A's in the last 4 years and a Francis Ford Coppola appreciation back in 2011. Now, in support of his acclaimed new espionage picture Bridge of Spies, Steven Spielberg has sat down with PTA for a post-screening Q&A at the Director's Guild.

Two Trailers For "Junun" Arrive As Film Debuts on Mubi

...and just like that, barely a month after we even knew the thing existed,  a new film from Paul Thomas Anderson is available to stream over at mubi.com

To celebrate this occasion, two trailers have been released in support of the film and accompanying album, which PTA said was due out next month in this brief Q&A following the film's screening at NYFF last night.

Both of these trailers give you some sense of the hypnotic nature of the music and world that the film captures. Check them out before heading over to Mubi to watch the full 54 minutes. Or you could go in cold. Arguments can be made for both.

New PTA-Directed Joanna Newsom Video To Screen Theatrically This Month

Paul Thomas Anderson has quietly helmed another music video in support of Joanna Newsom's upcoming album Divers, and it is going to screen across the United States from October 16-22. The video is for the title track and, like PTA's video for Sapkanikan, it was filmed in New York City. However, instead of using bustling NYC streets for locales, this new video was reportedly shot in the studio of artist Kim Keever (via Pitchfork).

We will revisit this post with more information about the screenings as they become known.

"Junun" Set For Rome Film Festival

Following its world premiere at the New York Film Festival next Thursday (and its streaming premiere on Mubi the day after), it looks like Paul Thomas Anderson's Junun is bound for the Rome Film Fesitval, which runs later next month, from October 16-24. Via ScreenDaily.

"Junun" To Stream Exclusively On MUBI Starting October 9th

Variety reports that subscription based streaming platform MUBI has nabbed exclusive streaming rights for Paul Thomas Anderson's new 54-minute documentary Junun, and it will be available to watch following the film's bow at New York Film Festival on October 8th. For those who don't know, MUBI functions sort of as an online movie theatre, where 30 films are available to stream at one time, with one dropping off and another replacing it each day.

In the Variety piece, PTA is quoted as saying, "We’re huge fans of MUBI and wanted to be a part of what they do. Hopefully people will discover both the music that’s been made by Shye and Jonny and a great place to watch films." Notably, this is the most overt embrace PTA has ever publicly given to viewing films in a digital format. 

So there you have it. A new film from Paul Thomas Anderson will be ready to be seen by the general public in just two short weeks. Now would be a good time to stroll over to MUBI.com and consider subscribing.

New PTA Film, "Junun", To Premiere At NYFF

There's been a slight (and pretty cool) epidemic, as of late, of world class filmmakers slipping their movies completely under the radar until they are edited and finished and premiering at festivals (see: Noah Baumbach). The latest director to add to that list is one Paul Thomas Anderson whose mysterious India exploits with Jonny Greenwood were actually the fruits of his first-ever documentary.

That's right... PTA made a documentary! The film is called Junun and will premiere at the 53rd New York Film Festival in the Special Events category. It comes in just under an hour long and here's  NYFF website has to say about it:

Earlier this year, Paul Thomas Anderson joined his close friend and collaborator Jonny Greenwood on a trip to Rajasthan in northwest India, where they were hosted by the Maharaja of Jodhpur, and he brought his camera with him. Their destination was the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort, where Greenwood (with the help of Radiohead engineer Nigel Godrich) was recording an album with Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur and an amazing group of musicians: Aamir Bhiyani, Soheb Bhiyani, Ajaj Damami, Sabir Damami, Hazmat, and Bhanwaru Khan on brass; Ehtisham Khan Ajmeri, Nihal Khan, Nathu Lal Solanki, Narsi Lal Solanki, and Chugge Khan on percussion; Zaki Ali Qawwal, Zakir Ali Qawwal, Afshana Khan, Razia Sultan, Gufran Ali, and Shazib Ali on vocals; and Dara Khan and Asin Khan on strings. The finished film, just under an hour, is pure magic. Junun lives and breathes music, music-making, and the close camaraderie of artistic collaboration. It’s a lovely impressionistic mosaic and a one-of-a-kind sonic experience: the music will blow your mind. World Premiere

Notably, as you'll see in the photographs in the above link in this post, PTA shot this one (at least in part) digitally. We can't wait to see what his first outing in that format yielded. With Pinocchio potentially getting underway soon, the fact that PTA has kept busy with this and the Joanna Newsom music video is very exciting. Stay tuned!

Paul Thomas Anderson To Write Robert Downey Jr's Live-Action "Pinocchio" Film

BIG NEWS: Robert Downey Jr's long-gestating live-action Pinocchio reboot has landed a writer by the name of Paul Thomas Anderson, according to The Hollywood Reporter. 

THR also reports PTA could potentially be in line to direct the picture as well. 

Love or hate this idea, it could not be more out of left-field. As well as being a producer on the movie, Robert Downey Jr. has nabbed the role of Geppetto for himself. Beyond that, we have too many questions, so we will just wait for more details to arrive.

WATCH: 12-Minute Behind the Scenes Doc From The Set of Inherent Vice, "Chryskylodon Blues"

When we spoke with writer/director Laura Colella about her film Breakfast With Curtis, she told us that she had been tapped by Paul Thomas Anderson to shoot the behind-the-scenes material for Inherent Vice. But with the blu-ray release of Vice having come and gone with none of that footage included, we figured we would be left scratching our heads for the rest of our lives wondering what the hell that set actually looked like. Not so fast...

Laura Colella presents...... Chryskyolodon Blues

It's a spellbinding twelve-minute reel of Super 8 footage from the set of PTA's seventh feature film, scored to music from The Growlers (the band cast as The Boards in the movie) and audio passages from the novel. It is especially cool to watch PTA & co. set up shots that have gone on to become some of the more iconic of the movie, as well as shots that never made it into the movie.

PTA Rumored To Be Considering A Return To 70MM For Next Project

At the 2015 Cine Gear Expo, which ended yesterday, Panavision screened test footage from Quentin Tarantino's forthcoming western The Hateful Eight and according to virtually everyone who was in attendance, the footage looked absolutely stunning.

Some background: Hateful was shot on 70mm with anamorphic lenses, which creates a much wider frame than 35mm anamorphic (35 anamorphic typically preserves 2.35:1 while 70 anamorphic preserves a massive 2.78:1). For reference, The Master was shot on 70mm with spherical lenses rather than anamorphic, and created a frame less wide than even 35mm anamorphic, preserving 1.85:1. So the difference in widescreen between The Hateful Eight and The Master is insanely huge.

And here's the really cool part: PTA may be taking a crack at Tarantino's wider 70mm format soon. According to camera/lens technician Scott Gleine, who was at the test screening, someone asked during the open audience Q&A portion of the presentation if any other filmmakers had seen or shown interest in the format since the Hateful test footage had been shot, and Panavision's VP of Optical Engineering, Dan Sasaki, specifically mentioned that Paul Thomas Anderson had seen the footage and is strongly considering the same format for his next project.

For what it's worth, PTA has mentioned before that Dan Saski was an integral voice in the decision to shoot The Master on 70mm, so his perspective is definitely worth noting.

But what is the project???

We're not sure just yet. But we do recall PTA mentioning he'd be interested in using 70mm in its intended aspect ratio when we chatted with him about The Master.

Time should clear up all the questions that are already percolating around this development, but now comes the hard part: the sitting and waiting.

Inherent Vice Bluray Set For April 28th Release

Hey there. We're a couple days late to this, but some slight radio silence has been required  and will continue in the next couple days/week as we undergo some technical maintenance.

Good news is, you can now preorder the DVD-bluray combo pack of Inherent Vice on Amazon before it is released to the buying public on April 28th.

If you have already purchased the film on iTunes, some special features should have popped up for you, including a deleted scene montage and a few unreleased trailers! We assume these are the special features that will be included on the blu ray.

"Inherent Vice" Screenplay Now Available For Download

As some of our more sleuthing readers might know, the script for Inherent Vice became quietly available to read through an (awesome, free) iPhone app called Weekend Read a couple weeks ago, but for the life of us, we could find it absolutely nowhere else online. We didn't want to post about it until we could deliver the real thing, and today Warner Bros. has remedied the situation.

NOTE: While the title page refers to this as the "final shooting script", the draft available for download is almost certainly a "for your consideration" draft - a version of the script which is prepared by the studio after the movie is completed to submit for awards consideration. FYC scripts are generally cut-and-pasted together from various revisions and cleaned up to match the finished film as much as possible. While we can be confident PTA wrote these pages, we can also be confident they were shifted around and reorganized to more or less replicate what is seen in the final cut of the movie. This would also explain why the title page is dated for after the production had already wrapped. "Vice" Now Available For Digital Purchase; New Interviews & More

Hello friends! Feels like it's been a minute.

If you are getting impatient waiting for the blu ray release details of Inherent Vice to arrive, you can bide some time by purchasing a digital copy of the film on all major platforms today. So what else is new? Well, for starters, we've amassed a bunch of interviews from PTA's international press tour for Vice.

Images of PTA shooting some vague mysterious-ish project in India were posted on Instagram within the past couple weeks. Elsewhere in that account are images of Jonny Greenwood and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich also in India, so we're guessing it's some kind of performance documentary piece. Pretty cool, right?

'Inherent Vice' Nominated For Two Academy Awards

It's that time of year again. The nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards have been announced, and mostly Inherent Vice was sorely neglected. The good news: Mark Bridges received a nomination for Best Costume Design and Paul Thomas Anderson was nominated for his groundbreaking Adapted Screenplay of the Thomas Pynchon novel.

We would've liked to have seen some of the stellar performances acknowledged, and/or Robert Elswit's career-best cinematography, but what are you gonna do. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, February 22nd, and we'll see if Vice can't pick up those two golden statues.

PTA to do Marc Maron podcast; Rudy Blatnoyd Poster/Trailer Arrives

After some speculation, and a fair amount of prodding on Marc Maron's part, Paul Thomas Anderson will indeed be joining Maron's WTF podcast, with the interview set to drop this coming Monday. If you aren't already a regular listener of the show, the episode will be free to download off of iTunes at that point. Maron's interviews are always, if nothing else, very long and very candid. So the talk should not be missed.
